Effects of Microorganisms ASA lesson 5
Helpful microbes Some act as decomposers – an organism that gets energy by breaking down and feeding on the wasted or remains of other organisms The “good bacteria” inside you helps break down your food Bacteria in termites helps them break down wood Some bacteria used to make yogurt
Bacteria
Harmful Microbes E. coli – can make you sick Some are parasites – an organism that lives on or in another organism
Microbes and disease A disease is any change that disrupts the normal function of the body Pathogen – an agent that caused a disease An infectious disease is caused by a microbe or pathogen and most often spread from person to person
Disease caused by Bacteria Strep throat Salmonella food poisoning Pneumonia TB Most bacteria diseases are under control, but the misuse of antibiotics has caused some bacteria to become resistant
Diseases caused by Protist Protist that cause disease are parasites Examples of diseases include African Sleeping Sickness, Malaria
Viruses A virus is a particle made up of a nucleic acid enclosed by a protein shell It is not living because they are not made of cells, do not respond to stimuli, do not have energy to grow and develop They can only reproduce inside a living cell
Diseases caused by Viruses Common cold Flu Small pox Yellow fever AIDS They cause diseases by killing or damaging cells. It injects its’ DNA into the good cell – viral repication
