Presentation transcript:

Outliers Socratic Seminar Each student will complete the following: Select on passage from Outliers (at least 6-8 sentences) in length to share and discuss with the class. Prepare at least 3 points to discuss based on this passage. It is your responsibility to draw our attention to the various aspects of the text (diction, syntax, use of persuasive appeals, etc.) Stick to the text. Your opinion only matters if you can support your ideas.

Expectations Every student will submit his/her work at the beginning of class. Your instructor will review the work and determine whether or not it fits the criteria. Take notes throughout the discussion. This is the “lesson” for today. You are expected to actively participate whether you are talking or listening. Students without work or whose work is incomplete WILL write an essay over a topic relating to Outliers. This is a non-negotiable. You don’t get to opt out of assignments. Bring your book. You can hardly lead us in a discussion if you have nothing to show us. Students without a book will also do the alternative assignment.

Instructor Role Moderate Keep the discussion moving (the less prompting I have to do, the better). Determine who has done the necessary work in order to participate. Encourage you to dig deeper as you explore your reading of the text.
