Introducing… Enriched Science

What is it? Like an Honors class… But, your schedule will not change! In the same room… Same instruction/lessons… Enriched Science! Called Enriched Science!

Who can do it? Any student who is earning a B- or above! Must sign a contract with parent Commitment for the quarter!

How is Enriched different than Standard?  Enriched homework instead of the standard workbook homework  Additional enriched questions on labs and exams  10 Enriched Science points chosen from the quarterly Enrichment Menu

Homework! Standard Workbook pages for the given chapter Worksheets & packets aligned to standards/curriculum Enriched OR All section reviews at the end of each chapter section OR Complete text chapter review for the specific chapter Worksheets & packets aligned to standards/curriculum

Labs/ Activities Standard Standard lab questions Enriched “3rd Page” More analysis Applications Graphing Additional variables Etc. Will be different for each lab!

Tests/Quizzes Standard Standard test Multiple choice Matching Limited short answer All Student will complete… Standards Assessment Simple Pop Quizzes/ Assessments Enriched Same information on the test, assessed differently. What to consider if interested… You need to be organized and self motivated! You need to complete the “Enrichment Path Agreement” and return to your Science Teacher by the end of next week (9/9) You can turn it in early! Look at other commitments… (clubs, sports, etc.) Do you have time to commit to this? It is a quarter commitment! More rigor and challenge!

Students choosing this path must demonstrate a high level of independence and personal responsibility. The expectation is that this enrichment opportunity is the choice of the student and is student driven. The standard classroom expectations for regular coursework and deadlines will continue to apply.

What’s this? Approximately 10 Enriched Science points chosen from the quarterly Enrichment Menu (8 this first quarter!) You will have a choices menu to choose 8 points that you are interested in and will challenge you! Take a look! Here are some of them!

Literature Review; Science Fair Season by Judy Dutton Points: up to 2 Read the book Do further research on one of the kids/projects focused on. Create a presentation of the information (book and yours) in an innovative way such as a storyboard, brochure, video, or poster Due by: October 7, 2011 Mandatory for all Enriched Students! Available at Amazon for $13.29 (Cover Price $24.99)

Chapter Review Game Points: up to 2 Create a game to review the concepts for chapters 1&2 or 3&4. Complete games will include; rules, a boards, questions, and game pieces. Science in the Media TV or Print (Chemistry or Scientific Method) Points: up to 1 each Watch a science documentary or read a science article. Must be at least 2 pages in length. Write a summary including one paragraph overview of the content and one paragraph reaction to the content Include a correct bibliography (maximum 2 per quarter)

Hot Stuff! Points: up to 2 An examination into fire walking. Research and create a magazine article or web page. Must have at least 4 bibliographical resources Complete overview and directions on the back of the choices menu! Dig in! …to the nucleus that is Points: up to 3 An examination of particle accelerators and cyclotrons Create a newspaper article with at least one image. Must have at least 4 bibliographical resources Complete overview and directions on the back of the choices menu!

Periodic Table Points: up to 2 Research the history and organization of the current periodic table… must go beyond the text! Include other options of organization of the elements and how the other charts are used, and who created them. Must have at least 4 bibliographical resources Present findings in an innovative way! Tour a Lab Points: up to 3 Tour a chemistry lab Create an article of poster of your findings Be sure to include the location and date of your tour. Overview and directions on the back of the choices menu!

Create Your Own Points: up to 4 See instructor if you have a great idea! This must be arranged with teacher prior to starting. Write proposal on separate page and submit for signature and approval. Proposals must be submitted by October 7 th Due no later than October 21, 2011

This quarter there are choices beyond the “Choices Menu”! There are 8 additional great and innovative topics to consider including… Killer Elements!- what elements are harmful to the body? The Quirks of Quarks learn about subatomic particles! Ice Demystified Why does ice float? Quicksand What is it and how does it work?

Plasmas What are they? Learn more about them! Metal in your blood! Why do we eat iron in our cereal? Cathode Ray Tubes How do old and new TVs work? Snowflakes How do they form and get so big!

When will you get the choices menu? You will get it as soon as you turn in your Enrichment Agreement! Please see Mrs. Hoffman if you have any additional questions!
