Issaquah Valley Elementary Health & Fitness

Christine Cottom Physical Education Specialist (425) I have been substitute teaching in the Issaquah School District since I have a BaED Physical Education from Central Washington University, and I am also endorsed in Special Education from the University of Washington. I am a wife and mother of three children who have attended school in the Issaquah School District. My favorite things to do are gardening and camping with my family. My mission in education is to present students with health and fitness concepts, physical skills, and motivation to excel through exciting and dynamic movement and activity. My goal is to help build worthy health and fitness habits that will continue for a lifetime.

Health & Fitness Expectations A positive learning environment is vital to help students be successful. To help guarantee a positive classroom environment, there are five expectations for students to follow while they are in the gymnasium: Be prepared for action (wear athletic type shoes and clothing adequate for movement activities) Give your best effort Respect Everyone and Everything Make good choices Be safe HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!

Consequences 1. Warning/Reminder to follow Health & Fitness Expectations. 2. Take A Break. If teacher calls on a student for misbehavior, student goes to Take A Break area. While in Take A Break; cool off, and think of positive behavior changes to come back into PE to participate. Teacher will talk to student, ask student to rejoin class if satisfied of positive behavior change. 3. Return to Take A Break? Stay in longer, or possibly rest of PE time. Student will be given Behavior Contract to complete and sign. 4. If SAFETY issue, Student will be SENT TO OFFICE immediately with another responsible student. Or, Teacher will call office to retrieve student. Student will be sent with behavior contract. Student and Dean of Students/Principal signatures needed on behavior contract before admittance back into PE class. 5. If behavior continues in following PE classes, teacher will make parent contact. Request for parent/teacher and Dean of Students conference will be given to Parent/Guardian.

Classroom Rewards 1. Points will be scored based on level of participation and behavior. Classroom students can earn up to 5 (FIVE) points: Score of 5! = Whole class followed all Health and Fitness expectations. (Score of 4, 3, 2, 1, accordingly. Score of 0 = Class did not follow any of class expectations, and teacher had to stop PE activities.) Paper score will be given to a responsible student, or to the grade level teacher. 2. Class can earn a “Choice Day” when a total of 10 – FIVE (5) point paper scores for PE are collected, then returned to PE teacher. Choice Day will be rewarded the following PE class time for that grade level classroom.

If for any reason, a student is unable to participate in Health and Fitness activities for a period of time due to an injury or illness, please communicate this via or by bringing a note from parent or doctor. The note should include the following information: The reason why the student cannot participate. When the student will be able to participate again. Provide contact information, to best reach parent/guardian. A signature from a parent or doctor.

Thank you, and EXERCISE on! Go Hawks!
