It is the oldest holistic healing system. It is consist of swishing coconut oil in the mouth. For over a thousand year, it’s been considered in the Indian folk remedies. One tablespoon of coconut oil is used and swished for about 15 to 20 minutes. This helps all the bacteria that is attached to the oral cavity get dissolved into liquid oil. Oil pulling is credited for many beneficial in the oral health. It is proven that it drawn toxins from the oral mucosa and other bacteria in the mouth. It is beneficial to the human health such as it increases the metabolism. It whitens teeth, controls malodor, halt bleeding gingival tissues, hydrate the oral cavity, prevent caries and tooth sensitivity. The efficacy of oil pulling was proven to decreases Streptococcus mutans count in plaque and saliva. It was also compared to chlorhexidine mouthwash and oil pulling had a lesser count of Streptococcus mutans by using the Dentocult SM Strip mutans test. Oil pulling may have a great impact on saliva ph. Normal saliva pH is approximately 6.4 and after swishing with coconut oil the pH level is around 8.2. There are also long-term effects on oil-pulling; it is shown to be beneficial as well as health improvements. Instruction on Oil Pulling.
