Black Sea Horizon International Workshop “Applied research in chemistry: Smart materials for a smart future” Identifying perspective areas of STI Cooperation between the European Union and the Black Sea region in the field of smart materials Sofia, Bulgaria 31 March 2016 CARBON NANOCATALYSTS ARE NOVEL ATTRACTIVE MEANS TO OBTAIN VALUABLE CHEMICAL PRODUCTS AND ERASING PETROCHEMICAL CONTAMINANTS Speaker is Prof. Dr. Eldar Zeynalov Institute of Catalysis & Inorganic Chemistry, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

Carbon materials: a) graphite, b) fullerene, c) diamond, d) CNTs, and e) GN.

Examples of oxidation of hydrocarbons in the presence of carbon nanotubes Cumene

Reaction network of cumene with carbon nanotubes as catalysts.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can catalyzes benzyl alcohol (BzOH) to benzaldehyde (BzH). A reasonable mechanism for the liquid-phase oxidation of BzOH on CNTs is proposed. Electron transfer in graphene skeletons plays an important role. Carbon catalyst displays outstanding recyclability. Nitrogen doping efficiently enhances the catalytic activity of CNTs for BzOH to BzH. Benzyl alcohol

Plausible mechanism pathway of BzOH oxidation with O 2 over CNTs.

They are AcPO (target product), 1-phenylethyl alcohol (PEA), 1-phenylethyl hydroperoxide (PEHP), benzaldehyde (BA) and benzoic acid (BzA), which were identified by GC–MS Ethylbenzene

Remediation of oil contaminated soil and water is one of the most important problems to make the environment congenial and propitious The Remedies Hydroxyl radicals formed according to advanced oxidation technologies

The accumulated numbers of scientific papers devoted to the application of advanced oxidation processes to soils remediation. The data are based on the search results from Web of Science (May 2015).

Schematic illustration on decomposition of organic contaminants by Fenton processes in the presence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes

The list of suggestions to the pertinent RTI topics: Institute of Catalysis and Inorganic Chemistry of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences does following suggestions: -to use nano-grade carbon nanocatalysts for solving the urgent regional ecology problems which imply total removing of oil contaminants from soil and sea surface -to develop a technology for nanostructured semiconductor materials with a higher efficiency on the basis of CdTe, CdS, CuInGaSe for advanced solar cells – to develop of new prospective materials for topological insulating systems (spintronics, optoelectronics and quantum computing) and thermoelectric energy conversion based on both the pristine and magnetically doped layered heavy-metal chalcogenides

That’s all. Thank you for the attention ! 23
