HRM28-TCDI Updates October 28 th, 2015 Fausto Lorenzo Maciariello, on behalf of the TCD Team

Outline 1.Beam Instability Consequences 2.Instrumentation Foreseen 3.Status of all the Sub-Assemblies 4.Pre/Post Analysis Tests 5.Expenses 6.Schedule

Beam Stability X Y HRM 28 Beam Parameters: σ=0.3mm Impact Parameters: 1σ Expected H Jitter: +/-0.075mm Expected Jitter after HRM24: 1 σ D=0.3mm 0.3mm

Vertical Axis The Main Goal of the experiment is to shot at the target with 1 σ impact parameter. The uncertainty of the hit location depends on the jitter Horizontal Axis Knowing the jitter on the horizontal axis will help to determine the Instrumentation alignment scanning procedure We Should Aim at 2 σ (if the Jitter of 1 σ is confirmed) Dependency of M-C safety factor and maximum energy density on impact parameter (in σ) for a round beam with a σ=0.295mm. For a round beam with a different beam spot size will be expected the same behavior.

Alignment Procedure METROLOGY 1.Install the head in it an ‘arbitrary/nominal position’ with the highest signal strength 2.Use metrology’s references to know the horizontal position of the optomet geometrical axis and the BPKG/BTV Theoretical Axis (line between 2 beam windows) Optomet Measuring Spot BPM

First 12 bunches shot, we see where the beam is thanks to the BPM 2.We align the Optomet geometrical axis with the beam (using the 5 th axis). As shown in the picture above 3.We scan with steps of 0.075mm 6 times to the left and 6 times to the right in order to find the peak Assumption: negligible the uncertainty from metrology when referencing the BPKG reference system to the axis movement system 0.25 Limit point reached after the scan All the distances are given in [mm] 0.225

Limit point reached after the scan !!! Worst Case Scenario: Measuring Spot will be 0.6mm from the beam !!!

Simplified Calculation: Best Case Scenario: 0mm Tmax=900 C Considering the Jitter: 0.1mm Tmax=700 C Pyrometer minimum measuring spot size: 0.4mm Calculated temperature on the jaw surface after 1 pulse Representation of the pyrometer measuring spot (0.4 mm) Temperature Point we could be measuring if the Jitter measured during HRM 24 is confirmed (+/- 1σ)

Heat Diffusivity Effect On Beam 0.1 mm 0.2 mm 0.3 mm 0.4 mm 0.5 mm 0.6 mm

Heat Diffusivity Effect Max Temperature: 1342 ̊ C Maximum Temperature Time History on the External Surface at Different Locations

Best Case Scenario: 0mm Dmax=5.7 μm Worst Case Scenario: 0.1mm Dmax=5.5 μm Optomet minimum measuring spot size: 0.066mm Representation of the Optomet measuring spot (0.066 mm) Calculated Displacement on the jaw surface after 1 pulse Vibrometer Point we could be measuring if the Jitter measured during HRM 24 is confirmed (+/- 1σ)

Instrumentation Foreseen Pyrometer There is a limitation in the technology of pyrometers which does not allow to have measurement spots smaller than beam spot size and measurement range C (features needed to be able to measure physical quantities for simulation benchmarking). NO Pyrometers will be foreseen Optomet One Optomet head per jaw will be installed Hard Rad Camera (External) 3 Cameras (Internal) BTV/BPKG

Tank: Delivered on October 27th

Collimator Brakes Motors can create noises on the signal measured by the instrumentation, brakes have been integrated into the system in order to be able to switch off the motors during the measurement. 14

Feet \ Plug-In \ 5 th Axis \ Berceaux

Back Stiffeners/Clamps/Jaws Back Stiffeners and Clamps: Delivery foreseen for October 22 nd but they have not been delivered yet Jaws SGL Graphite: Delivered UT done on 1 Jaw Metrology done on 1 Jaw 3D C/C Mersen Delivered Machined Metrology done 3D C/C Herakles Delivery foreseen for October 31 st Mersen Graphite 2123 Delivery Foreseen for Friday 23 rd and postponed for December 13 th !!!

Pre/Post Irradiation Analysis The scan on the Graphite Jaw confirmed the results on the samples done in the past: Detectable defects: 1mm over 25mm thickness, 2mm over 50 mm thickness Micro tomography labs wont be able to accept irradiates samples (radiation levels foreseen by Gen) Microscopy Inspection (CERN, MM lab) Metrology Controls: Pre irradiation metrology are already on-going on the received targets
