GCI Overview Steve Browdy with input from Doug Nebert May 2012

GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) The GEOSS Common Infrastructure allows Earth Observations users to search, access and use the data, information, tools and services available through GEOSS. It consists of the following main elements: GEO Web Portal (GWP): web interface to search and access GEOSS. Component and Service Registry (CSR): contains information on all resources provided as contribution to GEOSS by MSs and POs. Component and Service Registry (CSR) Discovery and Access Broker (DAB): allows discovery and access via the GWP to heterogeneous resources from different catalogues. Clearinghouse (CH): connects to GEOSS resources registered in the CSR and provides access via the EGB and GWP to the user. Centralised EO Inventory Clients (GENESI, CWIC, FedEO): enabling discovery/access to heterogeneous data from federated repositories via the EGB and GWP. GEOSS Registries: –Standards and Interoperability Registry (SIR): contains information on Standards and interoperability arrangements implemented in GEO.Standards and Interoperability Registry (SIR) –Best Practices Wiki (BPW): contains information on EO best practices.Best Practices Wiki (BPW) –User Requirement Registry (URR): contains data user requirements.User Requirement Registry (URR) –Semantic Registry (SR): contains semantic information to support user search.Semantic Registry (SR):

AIP efforts should seek to: Populate/register primary data assets, especially as available through standard service interfaces Exploit existing catalog and data access interfaces in applications Register applications that can work on MIME types registered in the SIR Demonstrate new or unexplored capabilities for the GCI and nominate them for inclusion

Questions to be answered in AIP: How should license and user management be enabled or coordinated in the GCI? What types of semantic information should be managed in GCI? Where? How would mobile clients and enabler applications interact with the other GCI components? How would quality information (services and data) be tracked and made available through the GCI? How should the interactions shown earlier be modeled in a more systematic way?
