 -7 southern states leave the U.S.  -Lincoln’s Goals: promised not to attack the southern states and to preserve the Union.

 4 more states joined the Confederacy totaling 11.  Border States: the 5 slave states that remained with the North: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, & Missouri  Virginia splits into 2 states: West Virginia (North) & Virginia (South)

 Union General with a two-part strategy for defeating the South.  Naval blockade around the southern states to destroy its economy.  Mississippi River: control the river to help divide the South.
