Police recruit training/education and university- police collaborations in the United Kingdom Richard Heslop, Sergeant, West Yorkshire Police, UK

UK policy developments Increased role for universities/colleges in initial police training. Shift from (traditional) post-employment model to pre-employment approach.

Assumptions/claims made about benefits of university education and preparation for policing (i.e. professionalize). Limited empirical research in UK. Most of the academic research emanates from America and Australia (for recent review see Patterson 2011, in Police Practice and Research, 12.4).

The Jury is still out on the relationship between university education and preparation for policing

Recent empirical research focussing on UK context: Heslop (2011) Reproducing Police Culture in a University (Police Practice & Research, 12.4) White & Heslop (2012) Comparing Police, Nurse and Teacher Educators, (Police Practice & Research, 13.4)

Findings/lessons

Distinction between syllabus and curriculum: Syllabus = course content Curriculum = content + values communicated

Professional learning curricula are produced within competing academic and professional interests.

Universities have cultures (facets are not always positive). Potential for ‘clash’ of cultures. Background of academics has relevance to curriculum (positioning between the profession and university). Emphasis placed by police educators on professionalism (and ‘role modelling’). Theory/practice distinction. Universities/police should not work in isolation.
