INTRODUCTION This speech is an overview of the characteristics of the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT), a software tool developed in 2009 to publish biodiversity information in the internet. The GBIF Secretariat, Denmark This lecture is presented by Alberto González-Talaván, Training Officer at the GBIF Secretariat in Copenhagen, Denmark. This presentation if not intended to cover all aspects of the IPT, not even in a summarised form. It intends to highlight the most relevant aspects for GBIF Participant Node Managers for them to evaluate the suitability of the tool for deployment in their networks. The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit

GENERAL SCHEMA The IPT is a part of the new GBIF set of tools, located in the publishing area of the equation. The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit

DEFINITION The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit An open source Java web application … to connect and serve 3 types of biodiversity data; l Primary occurrence (distribution of organisms) l Species names information l General resource metadata … from a source database or text files … to make data made publicly available on the GBIF distributed network The IPT is…

GENERAL FEATURES The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit l Multilingual web application l Contains a mapping server l Role based user management (user, manager & admin) l Embedded database (index and management) l Supports the ability to upload text files or use SQL connections l Use vocabularies to limit terms l Use extensions for managing other data types l Perform basic data quality checking l Assigns/manages Globally Unique Identifiers (GUIDs)

DATA TYPES The GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit PRIMARY OCCURRENCE DATA Data Model: Darwin Core (star schema) Text files and SQL connections allowed NAMES AND CHECKLISTS Data Model: Darwin Core (star schema) Allows taxonomic hierarchy, synonymy, nomenclature notes... METADATA Data Model: Revised Ecological Metadata Language (EML) Associated to connected datasets or not OTHERS Through extensions
