Searching Library Resources Michael Veitch Senior Information Adviser

What is peer-review? A peer reviewed article is one which has been read by experts in the subject, who have judged it to be of a high enough standard to be published in the journal.

What is full text? A phrase used in a database to indicate that the complete text of a journal article is available.

What are references? A list of acknowledgements when you have quoted the work of another author in your own essay or dissertation. It usually comes at the end of your piece of work.

Raz, T. and Michael, E. (2001) Use and benefits of tools for project risk management, International Journal of Project Management, 19, pp Searching for an article from the reference

Search tips 1 Decide on the keywords which describe what you are looking for. Are there other words which you could use? Or alternative spellings?

Search Tips 2 Do you want to limit the search by time or place? By adding UK for example? Be flexible, be prepared to try different keywords. For example ‘construction’ or ‘building’

Search Tips 3 Use your keywords to search. Combine them with AND to narrow your search. Such as ‘sensor’ AND ‘design’ Combine them with OR to widen your search Such as ‘robot’ OR ‘automated’

Search Tips 4 You can usually truncate or shorten the word, often with the * symbol. For example, measur* would find measure, measures, measuring and measurement. Using speech or quotation marks will often find the exact phrase such as “shear wave velocity”
