Presentation transcript:

Vehicle Example 1 Body is made of medium density fiber board (MDF) Wheels were cuts with a hole cutter 1/8” dowel axels were inserted through holes drilled through MDF and held on with hot glue Knockdown device was made with craft sticks and hot glue

Vehicle Example 2 Body is made of 2” x 2” pine Wheels were cut out with a hole cutter 1/8” dowel axels were inserted through holes drilled through pine Back wheels are held on with scrap craft stick glued on axel Front wheels had axel glued into wheel Knockdown device was made with craft sticks, chop sticks, mini sticks, wood glue and hot glue

Vehicle Example 3 Statue Platform and Statue are visible at top of picture This Statue is from Easter Island, the plans included in the lesson are for a Missile Statue reflecting the Lockheed Martin THAAD Fellowship This vehicle has redwood wheels for lighter weight The axels have been glued into the wheels Knockdown device was made with craft sticks and hot glue The back of the vehicle has additional wood added for balance

Vehicle Example 4 Three wheel design Wheels are mini CD’s Wood was glued to CD and drilled with ¼” hole to accommodate axel Body is MDF with veneer Knockdown device was made with craft sticks and hot glue

Vehicle Example 5 Another three wheel design Notice the variation on the knockdown device

Vehicle Example 6 Another three wheel design Offset back wheel ¼” dowels were used to connect the body sections Body blocks were oak and walnut Wheels held on with luan plywood and small brad nail

Vehicle Example 7 Using a cordless drill to drill out material from a CD wheel to reduce weight

Vehicle Example 8 ¼ “ dowels used to connect body parts Body parts are plywood, ash, and mahogany Roller wheel on right was designed to ride the rail of the ramp and guide vehicle down to statue at right distance away for a knockdown Notice the holes drilled to reduce weight

Vehicle Example 9 Example 8 with wheels on Knockdown device is 1/8” dowel Weight 1.65oz, current 1 st place This design went through multiple iterations to drop weight and reach 1 st place in class The roller guide wheel was removed in front to reduce weight It was found that the wooden guide in front was all that was needed to direct the vehicle down against the rail at the right distance to achieve a knockdown

Vehicle Example 10 Notice how masking tape was used to save on weight The wheels are made of MDF The body is plywood The center riser is a ¼” dowel drilled into base The knockdown device is a thin piece of oak scrap

Vehicle Example 11 The interior of the body was removed by drilling a 3/16” or larger hole at the drill press, then removing and inserting the scroll saw blade to cut out the interior material When the cut is finished, the scroll saw blade is removed This can be done before the wheels are attached. Or don’t glue the wheels on, just tension fit them on, so you can remove then and remodel your vehicle later

Vehicle Example 12 Contact is made in the top slide The statue falls in the bottom slide for a successful knockdown This design utilizes premade wheels, typically used for CO2 vehicles The knockdown device was adjustable for height

Vehicle Example 13 A common pencil and scotch tape are used

Vehicle Example 14 If the Fault Tree identifies too much weight The bottom slide shows a solution

Vehicle Example 15 Compact design Made of pine and MDF

Vehicle Example 16 3-wheeled design Notice that the two wheels are in front on this version

Vehicle Example 17 Different types of craft sticks in use Wheels held on with hot glue

Vehicle Example 18 Pre-fab wooden wheels Metal washers used to keep axel steady on base 2 nd place design

Vehicle Example 19 Digital Scale used to measure vehicle weight Available from Midwest Technology Products Metal brackets used to attach to large piece of plywood to prevent theft
