What’s the Use? Imagine you and your friend have witnessed a robbery. Consider which one of you the police will find the most helpful…. YOU: “The thieves sped off in a car.” YOUR FRIEND: “The two white males jumped in a green, battered, two-door car and sped off.” Adjectives information!

Adjectives Definition: An adjective is a word used to describe a noun or pronoun or to give a noun or pronoun a more specific meaning. Adjectives answer the question What kind? Which one? How many? or How much? about the nouns and pronouns they modify.

Examples What Kind? red house sick child silver jewelry cool water Which One? third chance this hat any piece those apples How Many? six flowers both answers several reasons few letters How Much? enough space no rain more energy little effort

Adjectives An adjective usually comes before the word it modifies. Example: –The sick child lay in bed. It may, however, also come after the noun. Example: –The child, sick with fever, lay in bed.

Exercise A – Answer these on a piece of paper and keep it in the grammar section of your binder. Directions: Write the underlined words in each sentence, followed by the noun or pronoun which they modify. 1. A strange creature crept out of the murky water. 2. A steady diet of any food will not provide sufficient nutrients. 3. The winner, weary but happy gave us a broad grin. 4. The big game was played on a raw, cold day. 5. A long drive lined with stately, old oaks lead to an old mansion.

Articles Articles are specific types of adjectives. There are two kinds of articles: –Definite & Indefinite The definite article - the –refers to a specific person, place, or thing. The indefinite articles - a and an – refer to any person, place, or things.
