Grammar 2 The Second Semester Adjectives Presented by Dr. Mohamed Sha’at

The objective of the Session Students are expected to: -Rewrite some sentences correctly. -Complete some sentences with suitable adjectives. -Use attributive and predicative adjectives correctly.

Language Focus, p. 130: Which of the following 2 sentences is more descriptive? - The bride walked down the aisle to meet her groom. - The tall, graceful bride in her white dress walked down the long aisle to meet her proud groom. The adjectives which are existed in the second sentence help the writer to give more detailed impression. What is an adjective? It is a part of speech that describes a noun. It usually answer the questions: Which one? What kind? How much? How many?

Adjective Position: - An adjective never follows the noun it modifies or describes. Generally adjectives come before the noun they modify. Adjectives that premodify nouns are called attributive adjectives. {Tall man, young teacher, brilliant idea, tedious task, stolen goods} - Angry customers complained about poor service in the new restaurant. Also adjectives may be premodified by the intensifier very. - She is a very repulsive woman. - He was very tired.

On the sentence level, most adjectives can function as a subject complement (Cs) or object complement (Co). Such adjectives are called predicative adjectives. Discuss the following examples: - The soup tastes good. (Cs) - This book is useful. (Cs) - Mr. Bill feels ill. (Cs) - The jury found Bill guilty. (Co) - Susan made her husband miserable. (Co) - We painted the house white. (Co) The predicative adjectives must immediately follow the linking verbs. Some common linking verbs are: be, become, seem, feel, sound, appear, keep, look, taste, remain.

Polling How can you grade this meeting? A = excellent, B = very good, C = good or D = fair.
