How does Saki use literary strategies to develop the conflict in “The Interlopers” through the character of Georg? Saki describes the antagonist in this story, Georg, in such a way that demonstrates the nature of the conflict. Saki describes Georg as an “inheritor of the quarrel and the tireless game- snatcher and raider of the disputed border-forest” (18-19). Saki uses words such as “game- snatcher” and “raider” to illuminate Georg’s devious character traits. Saki also establishes the progression of the feud, by this description. However, as the story progresses, Georg’s character changes, and he goes on to say, “And if we choose to make peace…you would come and keep the Sylvester night beneath my roof, and I would come and feast on some high day at your castle” ( ). Georg is no longer seen as a taker, but as a giver. The Sylvester night, German New Year, symbolizes the beginning of their friendship. Finally, Georg’s utters his last words, “Who are they?” (165) as he strains his eyes to see what Ulrich “would gladly not have seen” (166). Georg’s last act is indicative of his character throughout the story. He is never able to “see” the consequences of the quarrel or of the wolves until it is too late.
