Clicking on the title of the resource will allow you to preview the materials (see Previewing).Previewing On the right-hand side you can find some information about each resource Tutorial materials provided by the Open University appear within a blue box and are labelled “OU tutorial material”.

Browsing and searching Alternatively, clicking on “Browse” will allow you to search by  Tags  Course Code  Language Level  Languages Next Using the “Browse” function

The results will be displayed like this.

Browsing and searching Next Clicking on “Advanced search” will allow you to narrow down your search. For example, you may want to search for resources to practice the imperfect, but only with the tag “Italian”. To access the “Advanced Search” click on the link below the “Search” box. Welcome to LORO Help Getting started on LORO Features of the LORO Homepage Browsing and searching Downloading materials Uploading your own materials Managing your profile Using bookmarks LORO Help will guide you through using LORO and help you make the most of its functions. Clicking on the blue arrows will take you to the relevant sections.

Downloading materials Getting ready for downloading Once you’ve found the materials you want (see Browsing and Searching), you will need to download them in order to be able to use them in your teaching. It might be a good idea to create a folder on your computer first to which you can save your downloaded materials. Once you’ve found a resource you are interested in, clicking on the resource title will get you to the page from which you can preview and download the materials. Make sure you are logged in before downloading. Next

Downloading materials You can download each document separately by selecting it and clicking on the “Download” button (see Downloading individual files).Downloading individual files Or you can download all the documents that are part of one resource together by selecting “Download as a zip” from the Toolbox (see Downloading a Resource).Downloading a Resource Two ways of downloading Next

Downloading materials The resources that are part of the OU tutorial material for a particular course contain some or all of the following file types  Tutor notes (extension:.doc)  Other supporting documents or worksheets (.doc)  PowerPoint slides (.ppt)  Elluminate Whiteboard slides (.wbd) *  Image files (.png.jpeg)* Occasionally you may find some other file types such as spreadsheets (.xsl) or sound files (.mp3). *Elluminate is the name of the voice conferencing system used for Open University tutorials. Elluminate Whiteboards (.wbd) cannot be previewed in LORO. For this reason image files (.png) have been provided. The function of these image files is to enable you to view the content of the Whiteboard slides when browsing in LORO. File types Next

Downloading materials Downloading individual files Next To download individual files you need to  Click on “Download” underneath the document  Select “Save” in the dialogue box  Select the folder where you want to save the document. Remember that image files (.png) often only replicate what’s on the Elluminate Whiteboard slides (which are not previewable). For your Elluminate tutorials you will need to download the Whiteboard file, not just the images. However, you may find the images useful for other purposes, for example in face-to-face teaching.

Downloading materials Downloading a Resource To download all the files of a resource you need to  Click on “Download this Resource as a zip” in the toolbox  Select “Save” when asked whether you want to open or save the file  Navigate to the folder where you would like to save the resource  Click on “Save” again You may have to unzip the files before you can use them. To do this  Right click on the zipped folder  Then select “Extract all” or “Unzip all” or “Open with…” A resource usually contains several files that are part of the same teaching activity. Instead of downloading every file separately, it might be easier to download the whole resource. Back to Help menu

Uploading your own materials Preparing your materials If you’d like to use LORO to share some of your own materials, it’s best to have a clear idea from the start what exactly you want to upload and to organize your files beforehand. The actual process of uploading into LORO is very quick and easy, but here are some things to consider when getting your materials ready.  Do you just want to upload one single document or several?  If several, are these documents related / are they part of the same teaching activity? If they are related it’s best to upload them together in one “Resource”.  Are the materials your own, or do they contain so-called third party material, for example images you got from the internet or an article from a newspaper? If so, you will have to be careful regarding copyright (for more info, see Attribution and Copyright).Attribution and Copyright  You shouldn‘t use an institutional logo within your own resources.  If you are teaching with Elluminate, and want to upload your Elluminate slides, it would be helpful to save them also as an image file (you can do this within Elluminate), so that they can be previewed in LORO by your colleagues.  Or you could use PowerPoint, which is previewable within LORO and will make your materials accessible to more people. Next

Uploading your own materials Getting started Next  Make sure you are logged in (see Logging in)Logging in  Click on “Resource Manager”  You will be taken to a new screen with a new toolbar. Click on “Create Resource” Once you’ve decided exactly what you want to upload and your materials are in good order, here’s how to get started.

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next This will take you to an upload form. There is information abut each section of the form in the following slides.

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Files & Links To upload a resource to LORO, click on Browse, and select the relevant file from your computer

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Files & Links Once uploaded, your resource will appear here:

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Resource details: Now you need to enter the resource details:

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Resource details: Once you’ve uploaded your files, you can enter some information to make it easier for others to find your materials and understand what they are. You can change the title you’ve given your resource. The title should be informative, but you don’t need to follow any particular convention. You should select the language and level from the drop-down menu. If your materials are specific to an Open University course, you can also enter the course code and course unit. If your materials are for any language or level, you can specify that too. You should write a short description of the resource. In your description you could say what materials are included in the resource and you might make suggestions on how to use them. :

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Resource details: Creators: You should add you name here, and the name of any other people who have helped created the resource, if appropriate (eg if you’ve worked collaboratively with others). You might also want to add an Attribution acknowledgement, for instance if you have used Creative Common images from someone else, or if you are creating a new resource based on someone else’s work.

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Resource details: Licence and rights clearance: It’s your responsibility to ensure that the materials you upload are your own or that you have permission to share them. Copyright: The two licenses offered allow others to download and use your material, as long as they attribute it to the creator (you) and don’t make money out of it. By choosing “Share alike” you allow the user to make changes to your resource before using it, whilst if you choose “No Derivatives” you are indicating that you don’t want users to modify your resource. Rights Declaration: You must indicate that you agree with the rights declaration by ticking this box

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Tags: You can enter some key words or “tags”, such as Perfect tense, Regions in Italy or Health. Make sure you put a comma after each tag. This makes your resources easier to find by other users.

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Viewing permissions: You can select from three options how to share your materials. Decide whether you want to keep the resource private, share it with the OU community or have it open so that language professionals inside and outside the Open University can see it.

Uploading your own materials Creating a new resource Next Save and finish: Don’t forget to click on “Save and Finish” to complete the upload process. This will take you to the “Resource manager”.

Uploading your own materials Viewing your resource Your resource will appear in the “Resource manager”. You can see more details, preview it, edit it or delete it using the icons on the right. Next To go to a resource, just click on its title.

Uploading your own materials Making changes To make any changes at a later stage, for example to add another document to the same resource or change the description, follow these steps from the homepage.  Click on “Resource manager”  Select the resource you want to edit  Click on the “Edit” icon on the right of the resource. Note that you cannot edit individual files within LORO. If you want to make a change within a file, you should take it down and upload a corrected version instead. Back to Help menu
