The Abiding Life Part II Pastor Joe Pursch Chinese Grace Bible Church September 11, 2011
Introduction
Why Jesus Taught These Things
John 15:1-2 (ESV) 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
John 15:1-2 (ESV) 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:3 (ESV) 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.
John 13:1-6 (ESV) 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
John 13:1-6 (ESV) 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
John 13:1-6 (ESV) 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
John 13:1-6 (ESV) 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
John 13:1-6 (ESV) 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
John 13:1-6 (ESV) 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"
John 13:7 (ESV) 7 Jesus answered him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand."
John 13:8 (ESV) 8 Peter said to him, "You shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no share with me."
John 13:9 (ESV) 9 Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!
John 13:10-11 (ESV) 10 Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you."
John 13:10-11 (ESV) 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, "Not all of you are clean."
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 25 "These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 28 You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me,
John 14:24-31 (ESV) 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

Where Jesus Taught These Things
John 15:1 (ESV) 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
John 14:31 (ESV) 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
John 18:1 (ESV) 1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered.
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 1 Let me sing for my beloved my love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 2 He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 4 What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 5 And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 6 I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
Isaiah 5:1-7 (ESV) 7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!

Who Are The People He Had In Mind
John 15:2 (ESV) 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
Matthew 7:15-23 (ESV) 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'
John 2:19 (ESV) 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
John 8:31 (ESV) 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV) 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

How God Responds To Each One
John 15:2 (ESV) 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
John 15:6 (ESV) 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 24 He put another parable before them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field,
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away.
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 27 And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?'
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 28 He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' So the servants said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?'
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 29 But he said, 'No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.
Matthew 13:24-30 (ESV) 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"
Hebrews 12:5-8 (ESV) 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.
Hebrews 12:5-8 (ESV) 6 For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives."
Hebrews 12:5-8 (ESV) 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
Hebrews 12:5-8 (ESV) 8 If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
Hebrews 12:9 (ESV) 9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live?
Hebrews 12:10 (ESV) 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.
Hebrews 12:11 (ESV) 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Romans 6:22-23 (ESV) 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
Romans 6:22-23 (ESV) 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
