WALKING OUR WAY THROUGH THE INVESTIGATION -Aims for techniques -Realisation -Analysis -Conclusion

AIMS FOR TECHNIQUE 1 Chapter 4 : Aims for [investigative technique 1] After I have finished writing the Background Research, I found out that (pregnant mothers need to be cautious of the food they eat in order to provide all the nutrients which are required for the developing foetus )…. (what was the main finding from the research?). So as to further my understanding and find out in more depth how …. (child care centres should be set up), I came up with the idea of carrying out a (visit at a local child care centre / questionnaire with 10 mothers / an interview with a gynaecologist … ).

This questionnaire/interview… is going to help me:  identify  acquire  become aware of  compare  get a better idea of  find out Use different verbs. Write at least 4 aims. AIMS FOR TECHNIQUE 1 Refer to pages 18 and 19 of the guidelines Write down your introduction and aims for technique 1

Here you need to do the actual technique and provide evidence for doing it e.g. photos, signature of a person you have interviewed, company’s rubber stamp… Techniques 1. INTERVIEW – 10 questions are enough. Do not do more than 3 interviews. 1 is enough.  You need to start with a consent form (page 23) to introduce yourself and to explain what your study is about. In the consent form you should also include a section whereby the interviewee signs that he is consenting you to take photos and/or record the interview.  Present the set of questions for the interview. NOT FILLED. REALISATION OF THE TECHNIQUE

2. QUESTIONNAIRE – questions. Hand the questionnaires to 10 (max. 20) individuals.  Try to use multiple choice questions, where participants tick the answer so that it doesn’t take a lot of time to fill in the questionnaire.  You also need to present a note at the beginning of the questionnaire, to introduce yourself and to state what the role of the respondent will be (page 25). REALISATION OF THE TECHNIQUE

3. CASE STUDY – if you are carrying out a case study you need to follow the baby/pregnant mother/ elderly… for a number of weeks. You need to prepare a list of things which you are going to observe. Also take photos as evidence. ALWAYS ASK FOR PERMISSION. Refer to pg 26. REALISATION OF THE TECHNIQUE

4. AUDIO-VISUAL PRESENTATION  If you are going to prepare a presentation, keep in mind to present it neatly, include pictures and not a lot of text.  Make use of text boxes, use bullets, and use a font size not smaller than 22. Make sure colours are not too bright and include all the information that is necessary.  You can also include video clips to make the presentation more interesting. (refer to page 28) REALISATION OF THE TECHNIQUE

5. VISIT  When doing a visit, prepare a list of the things you want to observe and also a list of questions you might want to ask to the owner. (Refer to page 30) REALISATION OF THE TECHNIQUE

6. ORIGINAL PRODUCT This might include: a.demonstration – in front of at least 5 persons. Take photos as an evidence. b.Recipe booklet – include 7-10 recipes and you must try at least 1 of the recipes. c.Education game /website/toy/leaflet – take photos of each step. (Refer to page 29) REALISATION OF THE TECHNIQUE

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 1. Interview – page 21  To analyse an interview you need to write down what the interviewee responded.  It is FUNDAMENTAL to link what the interview told you AND what you have found in your research. E.g. One of the questions asked during the interview was about the importance of taking folic acid supplements during pregnancy. Dr. Borg confirmed that folic acid is fundamental as it reduces the risk of having a baby with neural tube defect. This has also been highlighted in the Background research, whereby numerous doctors outline the importance of having folic acid before and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Eventually I asked Mr. Borg…. ANALYSIS OF THE TECHNIQUE

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 1. Interview – page 21  The exact answers (as shown in pg 21) given by the interviewee need to be inserted at the back of the investigation in the section called APPENDICES.  In this section also include pictures of the interview. ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 2. Questionnaire – page 24  You need to analyse question by question and present the answers in bar graphs/pie charts.  For each question write a paragraph to summarise what the majority of the respondents said and how this relates to your research. What the respondents tell you might be opposite of what you found in research. That’s ok. Comment that perhaps this outcome resulted due to lack of knowledge of the respondents etc… ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 2. Questionnaire – page 24  The filled in questionnaires have to be presented in the Appendices chapter. ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1 ALWAYS RELATE YOUR FINDINGS WITH YOUR RESEARCH AND GIVE YOUR OWN OPINION!

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 3. Case study – page 26  You can present your data in a table or using graphs.  Comment on how the baby progressed during your visits.  Always relate to what you have found in research and also give your own opinions using words like “I think / I believe / I reckon / in my opinion...” ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1

ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 4. Audio-visual presentation – page 28  You can present feedback sheets to the persons to whom the presentation is going to be shown. They can comment on the quality of the information, the layout of the presentation, whether they have learned something new… ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1

Each technique can be analysed in different ways. 5. Visit – page 30  Always relate your findings from the visit with your research. Give your opinion and you can also give your recommendations.  You need to present photos of the visit, along with captions. ANALYSIS OF TECHNIQUE 1 You must discuss your results. Don’t illustrate only what you have found but also link to the research and give your opinions/recommendations…

CONCLUSION OF TECHNIQUES Now that you have analysed your techniques and related your findings with the background research, it is time to draw the main conclusions from your techniques. 1.First summarise in two paragraphs the GENERAL FINDINGS from your background research and from the TWO techniques. 2.Include your own thoughts.

E.g. One of the main conclusions that emerged from both the research and the interview was that breast-feeding gives the best start to a new born baby. However, many mothers are still opting for bottle-feeding. In my opinion, there should be more awareness about the benefits of breast-feeding so as to encourage more mothers to breast-feed their babies. CONCLUSION OF TECHNIQUES Make sure to draw conclusion from the TWO techniques, as marks will be awarded for the conclusions drawn on technique one and two.

ASSESSMENT If you want to find out the assessment criteria, and how I shall be awarding the marks go to: Click on curriculum – secondary curriculum – forms 3 to 5. Find Home economics and download the syllabus for forms 4 and 5. In the syllabus you will find the assessment criteria for the investigation.
