5 minutes to write on… WRITE: Your teacher has asked you to write an essay answering the question, "Why do you like your favorite subject in school?" Before you begin writing, think about which school subject you like best. Consider exactly what it is you like about that subject. Think about interesting things you have learned or done in that subject. Now write an essay for your teacher telling why you like your favorite school subject.

Today’s objectives Today we will: Assess our word count production per STAAR requirements Be inspired to create dynamic and engaging hooks Assemble our powerful conclusion Peer and self edit/revise

Changes in STAAR testing Your total testing time will be recording both locally AND on the answer document. Your break times will be as well. You will need to close your book to indicate a break.

Zax essay daily grade Count how many words you have total. Divide that number in half (by 2) That’s your score.

Inspiration…. Team compromise m/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y m/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y Team Steadfast m/watch?v=_guBE6TBho M m/watch?v=_guBE6TBho M

Conclusion Thesis statement Dependent clause, restate prompt reason 2 and reason 1. As someone who is steadfast learns quickly, it is better to stand your ground because it shows confidence and leadership. Because I work well with others, it is better to compromise because it is faster and friendlier. Transition sentence (something universal) The United States is rooted in the pursuit of individual liberties and remaining true to your course. As we learn in kindergarten, there is no “I” in team and so we work best when we work with others, not against them. Second best Hook

Now you need to edit Number the lines of the paper Make it pretty Count the words ( )

Ideas and Content Does it make sense? Is it expository? On topic Introduction and conclusion match body paragraphs Examples are there and support topic Are the ideas unique and interesting?

Organization Are there four paragraphs? Are they visibly separate and indented? Are the introduction and conclusion about the same length? Are the two body paragraphs about the same length?

Sentence fluency How many compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences are there? Do they start with the same words (I, There, The, etc)? Are they mostly baby sentences?

Word choice How many times do they use “stand your ground” or compromise? How many times do they use “for example”? Do they use any other word too often? Baby words? Any big words or do they need thesaurus?

Conventions Put your finger on the capital letter, then the period. Are there both? Is it a sentence between? Run-ons? Fragments? Spelling? (even if you aren’t sure)

Presentation Writing is legible? EVERY word? Is writing too big? ish words on ONE page Leave too much white space?
