Objective 1.02: Workplace Readiness Standards and Behaviors
Presentation transcript:

Relate workplace readiness standards and behaviors Mrs. Magno

Decision Making Process 1. Identify decision/ problem Make sure you are solving the problem and not a symptom of the problem Look beyond the obvious 2.Identify alternatives Do not rule out any possibilities Use various approaches to the solution 3.Choose best alternative Keep in touch with reality and forget any alternatives that are wishful thinking but not realistic. Set standards for judging the real alternatives Keep in mind all risks involved Weigh the pros and cons of solutions 4.Take action Choose the solution that will give a high probability of success Once the decision has been made, put it into action. 5. Evaluate results Get Feedback From feedback, you should see if solution worked or do you need a new decision Check to see if the new decision made has any problems that will now be resolved

Communication 1. Verbal 2. Nonverbal

Communication 1.Verbal communication: talking, reading, writing, letters, tapes 2. Nonverbal communication: body language, facial expression, voice inflection, posture

The Communication Process Communication is the process of exchanging information, ideas, and feelings. must be a listener, a receiver and a message. many things that act as a barrier to this communication: attitude judgments noise predispositions body language distractions By looking and listening for feedback, the sender can tell when the message has been received. Communication is important in the workplace.

Personal Characteristics for Workplace Readiness 1. Ambitious- desire success, aggressive, climbing, etc. 2. Patient- calm, easy-going, tolerant, etc. 3. Flexible- adjustable, adaptable, etc. 4. Productivity- generative capacity, production, etc. 5. Accuracy- sharpness, correctness, carefulness, efficiency, etc. Mrs. Magno

Business ethics Punctual- timely, exact, etc. Honest- truthful, authentic, ethical, etc. Cooperative- collaborative, helper, team worker, etc. Mrs. Magno

Let's practice all the concepts… CLASSWORK Mrs. Magno

Situations… 1. Liza works for minimum wage at the local home supply store. She operates a register and helps assist customers. She is a single mom and her 10 year old son rides the bus home everyday from school. They do not live close to other people so he gets scared often. When he is scared, he calls his mom at work and cries. Liza talks to him until he is no longer upset. This happens about 2 times a week. 2. Bob works with a construction crew framing houses. He needs extra income so on the weekends, he goes back to the construction site where the crew works and gets wood to build birdhouses that he builds and sales. 3. Alston works for a local hardware store. The store has a lot of business and does very well. Since Alston runs the register at the store he knows that the store sells a lot of items. Sometimes when he does not know the price of screws, nails and other small items, he just gives them to the customer. He also likes to “Hookup” his family and friends by giving them things without charging them. 4. Sonya is ordering wallpaper for a customer who is obviously very wealthy. Sonya wants one roll of the same wallpaper for her bathroom. When she calculates how much to order for the customer she adds an extra roll for herself and charges it to the customer Divide students in groups of 4 let them discuss the topic.. If its right or wrong. If wrong what could they do to make it right?

Scenarios… Scenario #1-- How will you proactively respond to this situation? Your boss is talking to another employee when you come in to punch your time card. You have reason to believe they are talking about you. This makes you feel uncomfortable and mad. Scenario #2-- How will you proactively respond to this situation? A close friend gets to go on a senior trip, all expenses paid. You are jealous they do not have to pay a dime. You do not think they deserve to have their parents pay for everything. You consider not going because you have to pay for part of your trip and do not think it is fair. Scenario #3-- How will you proactively respond to this situation? At work, you developed a new way to organize the filing system that makes it easier for the office staff to find documents. Your supervisor takes all the credit. Scenario #4-- How will you proactively respond to this situation? You are a nurse. The patient you are working with is ungrateful, rude, is always finding fault in everything you do, and makes your life miserable.

The end!! (: Mrs. Magno
