Learning community process: -groups -shared learning -making connections -functional relationships & inclusivity

Jeff Engler University of Alabama at Birmingham Teaching-As-Research in Ethics Education

Teaching as Research Projects in Ethics Education Jeff Engler Associate Dean for Academic Affairs UAB Graduate School

Ethics Education at UAB Since 2006, two extramural funded grants to embed ethics education into the curriculum. The Professional Development Program trains most TAs in the STEM disciplines, including an introduction to teaching pedagogy. As part of their training, the TAs prepare a lesson plan for a one hour activity for undergraduate students to engage them in a discussion of data integrity.

Showtime!

Data handling in the general chemistry laboratory: A notebook keeping exercise Mitzy Erdmann and Joe L. March University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Chemistry BCCE 2012

UAB’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) promotes the following strengths, each essential for success in work and life: effective communication skills; depth and breadth of knowledge; experience with problem-solving; and the ability to make informed, ethical decisions and be prepared for responsible citizenship in the community, nation, and world. Ethics and Civic Responsibility

Activity created as an assignment in GRD 715 Teacher training course designed for teaching assistants across the sciences Course required creation of a minute assignment on ethics Activity run as a make-up lab in Fall 2010 in CH 116 (General Chemistry 1 Laboratory) Approximately 60 students participated Informal student feedback was positive Activity incorporated into the CH 116 curriculum in Fall 2011 Approximately 650 students participated Student responses collected and recorded Graduate Assistant Training in Ethics

Students test ‘water’ samples Students are under the impression they are testing the pH as a crude way to determine the relative nitrogen content in water. Some samples have been intentionally mislabeled by instructor Instructors use the class data to discuss ethical and data handling issues Students reflect on the results Overview of the Activity

Where are we headed? We have 30 – 40 TAs who have completed at least one of the three requirements for our CIRTL Fellow level certificate. About 50% of those students tell us they will complete the requirements for CIRTL Fellow. We have buy-in from the faculty in Biology and Chemistry to encourage TAR projects in ethics as part of an MS in STEM Education track.

CIRTLcast December 4, 2012 Mitzi Erdmann and other graduate students from UAB will discuss ethics education in STEM undergraduate education
