DO NOW In your notes… List as many types of birth control that you have heard of. How does this form of birth control prevent pregnancy? Which type do you think is most effective?

FORMS OF CONTRACEPTION

CONTRACEPTIVES Artificial methods or techniques use to prevent pregnancy as a result of sexual intercourse.

OBJECTIVE By the end of today, I will be able to explain how various forms of contraception prevent the male and female reproductive systems from fertilizing an ovum.

CONTRACEPTIVES Many forms of contraception require a doctor’s prescription.  Exceptions include: male and female condoms, sponges, and emergency contraception

CONTRACEPTIVES  Contraceptives do not prevent the contraction of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) or HIV  Male condoms are the only form of contraception proven to prevent STIs

CONTRACEPTIVES JIG-SAW You will work in groups to answer:  Where does this form of contraception work?  How does this form of contraception work (give a brief description of the key points)?  Is there any important information about the time frame of this contraceptive or other pertinent information about how it is used?  How effective is this form of contraception?

GROUPS  Rhythm Method  Male Condom  The Patch  Intrauterine device  Emergency Contraceptive  Oral Contraceptives (“The Pill”)

AGENDA  10 minutes to prepare your part of the jig saw  Your group of 5 will then have 20 minutes to share the forms of contraception and take notes on each other’s presentations.
