jcjc “Weekly” Meeting

What’s Going On… Monthly MSD Seminar ( 2 nd Tuesday of each month at 4:00pm…) – 3 rd Tuesday of every month, 11:00 am in the Hermitage No seminar in December MSD Seminar Schedule Mu2e – It’s not an experiment, it’s a never-ending cost estimate Present estimates are 3 Ph. D.’s expected (along with 16 MBA’s… ) MAP –Draft FY12 Budget is manageable (to date…) Total similar to last year FNAL YBCO coil work to stop – concentrate on 2212 DOE funding to universities for MAP work now to be routed through MAP management –MICE magnets Coupling Coil – fabrication and testing, moving ahead… –FSU dewar at MTF (parking lot) - test site will be CHL (~90% C.L.) –Conduction cooling –Quench protection, peak voltages need further study 18 November 2011 JCT - Weekly Overview -2-

What’s Going On, cont. 18 November 2011 BSSCo (VHFSMC follow-on) – BNL, FNAL, FSU-NHMFL, LBNL –Proposal submitted - status? – Budget was similar to the VHFSMC total for the same labs – ‘Formal’ cooperation w/ HE–LHC being discussed (see next slide from Eucard meeting) Budgets are still unknown (but similar to last year?) for now … – Not taken up by Congress – expect in December More communication –Next George – what’s going on with conventional magnets… Mike – Mu2e measurement concepts Tbd… JCT - Weekly Overview -3-

VII. US and JP Labs researches for the HTS for HE-LHC as contribution to EuCARD2 program (from L. Rossi’s summary) Following the videoconference held on 26 July the following laboratories are considered for close and long term collaboration with EuCARD2: Japan: o KEK o Kyoto University KEK and Kyoto are already in close collaboration, especially for YBCO. USA o ASC-NHMFL-FSU (Florida) o BNL o FNAL o LBNL o NCSU (North Carolina) ASC-FSU will probably lead a collaboration of few DOE laboratories that will continue the Bi-2212 round wire development, beyond ARRA, which is formally ended on 30 June So it will be the main entry point for the EuCARD2 – USA collaboration on Bi The idea of having EuCARD2 developing the powder for the USA program and EuCARD2 participate to the Bi-2212 program of USA is very well accepted by DOE and US collaborators. The detail how this can work must be discussed. Another point of collaboration on Bi-2212 is the CERN technique of analysis of sample during phase formation (C. Scheuerlein). Clearly the DOE labs are the natural first collaborator of CERN and EU HEP community, given also the ties for HiLumi LHC. For YBCO the collaboration will be probably more founded more on bi-lateral collaborations. It may include of course collaboration with other US industry (SuperPower?) and other labs: BNL, who has a strong YBCO program, and NCSU, who has developed also instrument (optical fiber) and analysis (Quench code) technique of broad interest and relevant for our program. 18 November 2011 JCT - Weekly Overview -4-

Safety and AOB, cont. Safety –Use of safety gloves a priority –Reminder: New stricter driving regulations in effect NO CELL PHONE USE (IN VEHICLES) ONSITE Stringent penalties for speeding, parking violations, etc. –Security – doors, etc. –Update from Romesh on ‘card key’ access to IB1: A lot of progress has been made, which includes the following: Funds (~ $159k for TD project ) from DOE Safeguards & Security has been secured. Iteration and adjustments have been done to the old plan in view of the funds available. Johnson Control has been here a few times to provide cost estimates. …we are negotiating the final price with a GSA discount. Fermilab BSS-Safeguard & Security has agree to dish out the difference of a few $K to complete the job including additional Video Surveillance cameras. I would venture to say that all this work will be completed before March 31, Keep ESH requirements up to date Traffic violations – –Change in routes due to construction – speed limits are lower Note – more temporary changes in front of TD expected soon –Revision of traffic citation penalties – they are now more in line with ‘real world’ (State of Illinois) –Note: Handicap Parking sign threatens a $200 fine… AOB 18 November 2011 JCT - Weekly Overview -5-
