Preparing Students for College, Careers and Life

What is STEM? STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is closely linked with our nation’s economic prosperity in the modern global economy. STEM will generate the scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians that will create new ideas, new products, and entirely new industries in the 21 st century.

The Mission High Eagle T-STEM Academy will: Instruct through rigorous and relevant curriculum Empower students to become innovators and technologically proficient problem solvers Ensure that all students have access to the appropriate technology conducive to enhancing their STEM learning experiences both in and outside the traditional classroom Nurture partnerships that allow schools and the business sector to join efforts to improve students’ STEM-career opportunities Increase the number of students pursuing careers in STEM-related fields and/or post-secondary STEM related education/training

Target Population 125 incoming 9th graders Students interested in pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and math Students who have good grades and good attendance Students who are dedicated and willing to accomplish goals

Embedded Enrichment Exposure to STEM Careers Field trips, Summer camps, Visiting Speakers, etc. TSI (Texas Success Initiative) preparation and examination. Unless exempt, students who are entering a Texas college or university must take a TSI exam and receive a passing score in order to enroll in credit bearing courses. College Credit Mission Eagle T-STEM students will take dual enrollment courses via South Texas Community College Advance Placement (AP) courses

Eagle T-STEM Curriculum Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is the nation’s leading provider of K-12 STEM programs. Our world-class curriculum and high-quality teacher professional development model, combined with an engaged network of educators and corporate and community partners, help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in our global economy.

Project Lead The Way, Research and Results Students who took three or more PLTW courses while in high school were six times more likely to study STEM, and eight times more likely to study engineering, in college than their peers who had not taken PLTW while in high school. PLTW participation was significantly related to persistence into the second year of college, especially for those students who had taken three or more PLTW courses. PLTW students are more prepared for and attended Texas higher education institutions at a higher rate.

PLTW Implementation PLTW Computer Science PLTW Engineering 1 section of AP Computer Science Principles (9 th grade) Follow on courses/additional sections to be added in through (do not include in quote) 5 sections of Introduction to Engineering Design (9 th grade) 3 sections of Principles of Engineering (10 th grade) 2 sections of Aerospace Engineering (11 th grade) 1 section of Capstone Course - Engineering Design and Development (12 th grade)
