Background Outreach Activities l Mission is to create awareness in the non-STEM( Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) disciplines to spread the IEEE outreach in the region. l 2015 Activities: First in that series was “Cornerstone: Mindfulness for Life”. Invited Jenn Fairbank and Erika Marcoux to conduct a workshop. This workshop received record audience and the survey indicated that the audience appreciated the much needed ‘out-of-the-box’ topic. l Plan for 2016: Partner with Round Rock Independent School District’s Partners In Education (PIE) and reach out to students at an impressionable age (10-16ys) with Science-In-A-Box (SIAB) program l Need IEEE Region support for such outreach activities.

Executive Summary Outreach Activities l Mission: “Science-In-A-Box” was inspired by session on “Mindfulness for Life” as ‘Out-of-the-box’ topic appreciated by the audience. l Initiated discussion with Round Rock Independent School Districts' Partners in Education (PIE) to reach out to students at an impressionable age (10-16ys) with Science-In-A-Box (SIAB) program. l 2016 Pilot Project Plan l Kick-off March 2016 l Complete kit purchase – April 2016 l Catalogue the kits for check-out – June 2016 l Roll out Science-In-A-Box program – Aug-Dec 2016 l Target end date of Dec 2016 l Final Report on the program to CS Jan 2017 l Pilot Project Cost $500 l $400 towards purchasing 10 kits. l $100 Administrative cost associated with launching the pilot program Recommendation: Approval of Project and Funding in January 2016

WHY l Why are we doing an outreach? l Create awareness for IEEE regional activities l Target middle school and high school l They are Americas’ future workforce l Create curiosity and promote critical thinking at this impressionable age l Introduce real life applications of Science, Technology, Math early on l Potential shadowing/interning opportunities for high-school students in the industry

WHAT l Science-In-Box. Science is all around us and not just in labs l Create one science box l Box will have all the supplies, instructions and higher level questions needed to understand that concept l Boxes will be cataloged by the library so that they can be checked out by the students l Student checks kit out for a week and conducts the experiment at home l Supplies are replenished to make it ready for check out again

WHERE l Pilot it at Round Rock ISD l Partner with ‘Partner In Education’ l STEAM – Science Technology Engineering Art Math

When l Project Plan l Kick-off March 2016 l Complete kit purchase – April 2016 l Catalogue the kits for check-out – June 2016 l Roll out Science-In-A-Box program – Aug-Dec 2016 l Target end date of Dec 2016 l Final Report on the program to CS Jan 2017

Next Steps l Cost $500/ for 2016 activities l Estimate Breakdown l $400 towards purchasing 10 kits. l = $ = $50.00 l = = l = times 2 = = times 2 = l = times 2 = = times 2 = l = 14 times 3 = = 14 times 3 = l = = l $100 Administrative cost associated with launching the pilot program Recommendation: Approval of Project and Funding in January 2016
