A Shared Commitment to Digital Preservation and Access

An outgrowth of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) A collaborative effort among government agencies, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and business entities to preserve a distributed national digital collection for the benefit of citizens now and in the future. National Digital Stewardship Alliance

Mission: The mission of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance is to establish, maintain, and promote the capacity to preserve our nation's digital resources for the benefit of present and future generations. National Digital Stewardship Alliance

Values: Stewardship Collaboration Inclusiveness Exchange National Digital Stewardship Alliance

Members 98 member organizations plus their affiliates have joined the NDSA since it was founded in July 2010 Members commit to making a sustained contribution to one or more stewardship roles. Membership is open to any interested organization.

Working Groups Members commit to participating in one of the five working groups of the Alliance: Content Infrastructure Innovation Outreach Standards and Practices

Working Groups Content The Content Working Group will focus on identifying content already preserved, investigating guidelines for the selection of significant content, discovery of at-risk digital content or collections, and matching orphan content with NDSA partners who will acquire the content, preserve it, and provide access to it. Scope of Work: Develop or contribute to a registry of content already preserved by NDSA members. Develop a clearinghouse that will enable a variety of stakeholders (content producers, archives and libraries and other potential preservationists)

Working Groups Infrastructure The Infrastructure Working Group works to build a community of sharing information and best practices about the development and maintenance of tools and systems for the curation, preservation, storage, hosting, migration, or similar activities for the long term preservation of digital content. Scope of Work: Investigate, share, and recognize emerging practices for use and development and sharing of open source tools and other software that enable digital preservation as well as computer forensic tools that enable digital preservation. Investigate, recognize, and document potential preservation emerging practices in the use of large-scale storage and cloud infrastructures.

Working Groups Innovation By encouraging and sharing innovative methods of digital preservation practices and technologies, we plan to distribute, document, and share emerging concepts, while conducting and guiding research and development with engaged partners to find solutions where none exist. Scope of Work: Develop a clear statement on the goals and purposes of data stewardship. Digital Preservation X-Challenges

Working Groups Outreach The Outreach Working Group of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance will focus on building relationships with stakeholder communities and preparing and sharing digital preservation information resources. This includes: Identifying and assessing tools the NDSA community needs for communication; Identifying and promoting key digital preservation information resources; Defining opportunities for outreach within the NDSA and to the community beyond. Scope of Work: Utilizing social media tools to spread the message Public Awareness Campaign Partner Recruitment

Working Groups Standards and Practices The Standards and Practices Working Group works to facilitate a community-wide understanding of the role of standards in digital preservation and how to use them effectively to ensure durable collections. Scope of Work: Survey and document the digital preservation standards landscape.
