Infamous former inhabitants include Al Capone, George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. As well as being a former military and federal prison it was occupied by Indians of All Tribes for 18 months. The boat trip to Alcatraz takes about 15 minutes each way and you can stay as long as you like Alcatraz Island
