Overview Acoustic Data Telemetry – Why do I need it? – Where can I use it? – What applications does acoustic telemetry have? Teledyne Benthos ATM-900 Series Modems – Standard Operating Modes – Available Options – Hardware Upgrades – Standard Modem Configurations – ATM-900 Series Firmware – Standard Features Question and Answer
Why do I need Acoustic Telemetry? To send real-time data To receive real-time data Wires are expensive and fragile Want to use water as medium
Where can I use Acoustic Telemetry? Anywhere High Noise, cold temperatures, deep water, shallow water Long distances, short distances With other acoustic devices
What applications does acoustic telemetry have? Send real-time data Receive real-time data ADCP’s, AUV’s, stress probe, CTD, tide gauge, etc.
Standard Features Capable of sending hardware break to Teledyne RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Data logger for instrument data Bi-directional half duplex Ranging Single RS-232 instrument or single RS- 422 instrument, RS-485 Device Enable Sends full hardware break to ADCP to wake any ADCP not a software break. 6144KB (6MB) for logging data Two way communications, one direction at a time Range from one modem to another Capable of interfacing to just about any RS232 instrument Can sink 20mA current at 40V DC Max

The Applications
Nova Southeastern University – Oceanographic Center Gulf Stream Monitoring Subsea: One ATM-885R, 2m cable and AT-408 Topside:ATM-891, 25m Cable, AT-408 Range/Depth: 3000m/800m Goal: Download data from ADCP once per month to verify operation. Deployment time: 1 year Data: Download 128KBytes once per month from the ADCP to verify that data is being collected. The 128KBytes is output by the ADCP into the modem Ring buffer which is a first in first out, FIFO, buffer with 128KByte storage.

BMT Scientific Marine Services William Offshore Spar – Devils Tower Subsea: One ATM-885 Directional and One ATM-885 Omni- directional Topside: ATM-891, 200m cable and AT-408 hull mounted to Spar Range/Depth: 2000m & 1000m/1890m & 800m Goal: Transfer ADCP data from two ADCP’s at different depths in the same water column. Deployment time: 2 years and 1 year Data: 1200byte current profiles sent from each ADCP every 20 minutes Notes: External battery packs are in use to extend deployment time to 1 and 2 years.
