Unit 4 reading Ⅱ Jin Peicheng Wenzhou Middle School

All scientists agree with the view that it is human activity that has caused global warming. For example, fossil fuels are used, releasing lots of CO2 into the atmosphere. As a result, more heat energy is possible to be trapped, causing the global temperature to increase. subscribe to consumed quantities of tends go up take off

Graph description 1.General trend 2.Detailed information  We know that the levels of carbon dioxide have increased greatly over the last 100 to 150 years.  He found that, between these years, the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere went up from around 315 parts per million to around 370 parts per million. Time & Data increased went up

Graph description 1. General trend The global average temperature is i_________ steadily. 2. Detailed information Between ______ to ______, the global average temperature went up from ______to _____ Fahrenheit increasing  increase  go ___  r_____  c_____ ise limb up

Conclusion: Conclusion: The rise of the content of CO2 in the atmosphere _____ the increase of the temperature. results in results from leads to gives rise to Graph description 1.General trend 2.Detailed information 3.Conclusion Graph 2: The content of CO2 in the atmosphere is rising. Graph 1: The temperature is increasing.

Graph description 1.General trend 2.Detailed information 3.Conclusion Tip: to emphasize a certain part: it is…that… 1. The rise of the content of CO2 in the atmosphere results in the increase of the temperature. 2. It is the rise of the content of CO2 in the atmosphere that results in the increase of the temperature.

 Dr Foster explains over the next 100 years the amount of warming could reach 1 to 1.5 degrees Celsius, but it could rise to 5 degrees.  Dr Foster explains any trend in which the temperature increases by 5 degrees would lead to a disaster.  Dr Foster explains there may be a rise of the sea level, the spread of diseases and even extreme weather.  Dr Foster explains “Though we can’t know exactly what effect global warming will have on the climate, it is possible to be serious.” Different attitudes On the one hand, Dr Foster holds a NEGATIVE attitude. catastrophe sudden, widespread and serious “We can't predict the climate well enough to know what to expect. It could be serious.” severe storms, floods, droughts says thinks p______ redicts a_____ grees ___________ the view that… subscribes to Tip: to present one’s opinion: different words

A. The health of the patient was in a recovery state. B. The USA is made up of 50 states. C. His father used to work in a state-owned company. D. It’s a dilemma so that she cannot state her position on the case clearly. Different attitudes On the other hand, George Hambley states that more CO2 is a positive thing: 1. It will make plants grow quicker. 2. Crops will produce more. 3. It will encourage a greater range of animals. 1.the government of a country 2.to say or express formally 3.a small partly self-governing area 4.condition Tip: to make the opinion convincing: supporting details

It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author’s attitude towards global warming is _______. A. positive B. negative C. neutral ( 中立 ) D. unknown  Does that mean we should do nothing?  Or, are the risks too great?  Or, are the risks of doing nothing too great?

 At least 11 islands are now disappearing as a result of Sea Levels Rise and one of them is Maldives( 马尔代夫 ).  Many residents ( 居民 ) in Maldives have been moving.

The graph shows the changes of residents of Maldives. On the whole, the number __________ steadily over this period, from ______ in the year _____ to more than ______ in the year _____. It can be concluded that it is the rising global temperature that ___________________________ _____________________. The decrease of the number of residents 20, , the number of residents general trend detailed information conclusion decreased  decrease  go _____  d_____  f_____ down rop all 2000 has resulted in the decrease of

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a resident in Maldives. When we talk about global warming, we are talking about the world of tomorrow. In a changing world, we need to be changers. And here are some suggestions: 1. (laws) … 2. (transportation) … 3. (environment) … In conclusion, don’t forget: We didn’t inherit( 继承 ) this planet from our parents. We borrow it from our children. Thank you! Speech Slogan 口号

 Empty words contain nothing but CO2.  It is human activities that really matter!

1.Share your speech with your classmates. 2.Review what we have learnt today. 3.Finish exercise 1 & 2 on page 28.
