(6 marks) Ionic substances have high melting points, high boiling points and conduct electricity when molten or in solution. This is because strong electrostatic attraction exists between positive and negative ions, as well as strong ionic bonds which require a high amount of energy to be overcome. When ionic substances are in solution, the ions are free to move about. Simple covalent substances have low melting points, low boiling points and do not conduct electricity. This is due to the weak intermolecular forces between molecules, low amount of energy to overcome and no free moving ions or charges.
