2016 Summer Captain’s Meeting

Welcome! TUC Announcements League Details Women's Committee Message Spirit Committee Message BREAK Review of League Format Rules Q & A Any other TUC or Ultimate related questions?

TUC Announcements Review ENTIRE 2016 Captain’s Permit Book Pay special attention to ‘Important Dates’ Page  TUC Summer Learning Clinics: May Summer League at 180 teams! Space for 1 team in Tuesday West and 1 team in Thursday West Sunday Master’s League has space for just a few people Fall Outdoor and Indoor Leagues will be posted by the end of June; watch for some exciting new options! Youth Coaches Needed

League Details Most games start at 6:45 (grass fields); some vary, so make sure to check schedule carefully and ensure games start within 15 minutes of start time Game end times on grass fields are variable due to darkness. Scheduled for 8:30, but can play later if agreed by captain’s before game; turf end times are fixed, so if still playing, hard cap in effect Play until 17 points (unless agreed by captain’s before game to play longer); have to win by 2, up to a maximum of 19 points

League Details Gender ratio is 4:3 (male:female); teams may also opt to play 3:4 (receiving team matches). No other ratio’s should be used Fields are more consistent this year Great quality fields in rotation, so hopefully few rain-out weeks  We do have some ‘back-up fields’ and also an extra week (September 5-8) with which to reschedule Questions about your league/fields? Ask your volunteer convener or MMS! * Enter Scores ASAP *

Women’s Committee Message What is the TUC Women’s Committee? Pick It Up!  June Coach for a Day

Toronto RUSH vs Montreal ROYAL Support Women’s Ultimate May 29 Varsity Stadium 12:45pm. See Toronto’s new Elite Women’s team, 6ixers Showcase Game versus Team Canada Women’s Masters who are preparing for the World Championships in London this June

Spirit Committee Message What is the TUC Spirit Committee?

Spirit of the Game Higher Ideals than Winning 1. Mutual Respect between players 2. Adherence to the agreed-upon rules, (Integrity) 3. Basic Joy of playing

The objectives of the Spirit of the Game (SOTG) scoring sheet are: 1. Educate players on what Spirit of the Game is 2. Help teams to improve specific parts of their Spirit 3. Celebrate SOTG by awarding a prize to the team that gets the highest score

Tell your players to use the BE CALM strategy Breathe: don’t react straight away Explain: what you think happened Consider: what they think happened Ask: other players for advice/perspective/rules if needed Listen: to what everyone has had to say Make: a call loudly and clear

Please choose a player to be your team’s Spirit Captain. Someone who knows the rules well and can remain calm in game situations.

"I can't play being mad. I go out there and have fun. It's a game, and that's how I am going to treat it." Ken Griffey Jr., Former MLB Superstar

BREAK Enjoy some food and drink! Feel free to stick around to informally discuss:  Review of League Format  Rules Q & A  Any other TUC or Ultimate related questions? Have a great 2016 Summer Season!

Review of League Format Schedules:  First game will be posted approximately a week prior to season start; the following week, we post games 2 & 3  We will try to always have your next two games posted in advance  REPORT YOUR SCORES! They impact the schedule  Time caps in schedule  Flex weeks for cancellations  Victoria, Civic, & Labour Day Holidays – Games are scheduled  Most games are slated to begin at 6:45 PM  Watch for LATER start times at premier fields!

Review of League Format Rain Cancellations:  We update ‘The TUC Rain Banner’ at the top of the website DAILY (around 3:30 pm) If games are CANCELLED, you will see it there, we will tweet and post on our facebook page If games are RELOCATED, we will contact individual captain’s as soon as we can If nothing is posted, games are on!  Games cancelled by TUC are not to be played. This is NOT optional. Teams choosing to play when games are cancelled will be sanctioned  Turf fields play in rain or shine

Review of League Format Fields for 2016:  See TUC Field List for fields and divisions. Note certain fields are available only on certain nights  Fields are distributed fairly across divisions. We already know that you want to play downtown/near a subway line/on premier fields!  Requests for very lesser desired fields (i.e. northeast) are feasible (please contact your volunteer league convener)  Accept what you get. If you start with a few ‘bad’ ones, chances are good ones will follow and vice versa – it will all even out in the end. Everyone gets their share of both  Read your field instructions and adhere to them  Use field map features and permits  Bring your own cones to set up your end zone; have a system to keep score during the game!

Review of League Format Game Times: Most Schedule Start Times: 6:45 pm Ideal Start Time: between 6:40 – 6:55 pm Must start by: 7:00 pm Exceptions: games scheduled at Birchmount Stadium, Cherry Beach, Downsview Park, Lamport Stadium, Monarch Park & Weston Lions Park (Turf fields) Starting the Game Late: If one team is not ready to play by 7:00 pm, or for other start times, 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, then the other team who is ready to play, is allowed to count one point every 5 minutes thereafter If a team is not ready to play 45 minutes after the scheduled start time (i.e. 7:30 pm), the game is considered a default and is scored as such in Zuluru

Review of League Format Game Format:  UPA 11th Edition rules  Games to 17 points (or time cap) – Must win by 2 points; cap at 19  2 timeouts per game – No overtime or universe point timeouts  Gender ratio is 4:3 (M:F) or 3:4 (pulling team matches receiving team)  Default NO foot blocks, but captains can agree otherwise  Non-Metal Cleats only!  When in doubt: PLAY WITH SPIRIT!!!!!!!!!

Review of League Format Scoring Games:  Submit your game scores as soon as possible  Scores, along with spirit scores and all-star nominations, are submitted through the website  Captains from both teams are required to enter the score  Scores need to be submitted within 48 hours of completion of the game  Spirit scores can be entered manually  You can edit an entered score, if an error was made  Zuluru videos on YouTube Captains Zuluru Assistance Video: Players Zuluru Assistance Video:  All Star Nomination – Captains are required to nominate a player from their own team as an all-star (rather than a player from the opposing team)

Review of League Format Incidents & Injuries:  Poor field conditions, injuries, dangerous play, fights, instructions from facility staff & use of our fields by non-TUC parties  What (type of incident), when (date), where (location), who (contacts), why (details)  Incidents with other groups – use SPIRIT, show field permits  Injuries – serious injuries (what happened) and/or related to field condition – TUC Player Participant Accident Coverage  Tick ‘I Have an Incident To Report’ in scoring section and provide details  Spirit Comments box for minor Spirit issues or Spirit compliments
