You must record this as it is possible you might want to review and quote the speech. Write a 4-5 page paper on the delivery and content. Turn in the paper with references and a link or tape of the speech you watched. Comment on the Introduction, Conclusion and Body (Monroe’s Motivated Sequence). Note positive and poor speaking habits. Assignments 12 Angry Men: As a class we will be viewing the movie “12 Angry Men” starring Henry Fonda. In this portion of the class we will discuss the power of speech and persuasion, the importance of small group communication, and the ethical trials of being a well- spoken leader. The outline should be structured exactly (both in format and length) as the example the instructor will provide. The speaker’s name should be added at the top of the outline above the title. Self-Evaluations: You must turn in a Self-Evaluation for each speech given. Speech grades will not be added until the student has reviewed their VHS tape and commented on their own speaking abilities. Makeup tests will only be permitted, at the discretion of the instructor, for excused absences as defined in this syllabus. Quizzes There will be three quizzes given for the course – comprising 150 course points. Quizzes will cover the assigned reading, handouts and class lectures. Makeup quizzes will only be permitted, at the discretion of the instructor, for excused absences as defined in this syllabus

Attendance Since listening and evaluating speeches are vital activities for a speech student, regular class attendance is imperative. More than 3 unexcused absences will lower a student’s course average one letter grade. Any absence on the day that the student is scheduled to give a speech lowers that speech grade one letter for each class meeting the speech is late, unless the absence is excused and the student presents documentation (proof, as described below) on the day of return to class. Specifically, the following guidelines will apply for attendance:

Attendance Excused Absences:Absences will only be excused for one of the following reasons, and documentation must be presented to the instructor verifying the legitimacy of the absence: (1) ILLNESS (medical documentation verifying a doctor’s office/clinic visit is required for an absence to be excused due to illness); (2) DEATH IN THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY (documentation is required); (3) OFFICIAL COLLEGE FUNCTION (coach or instructor letter verifying mandatory attendance at the function must be provided prior to the absence).

Attendance Unexcused Absences:All absences not meeting the criteria above will be unexcused. 1 – 3 unexcused absences = No Impact on Semester Grade 4 – 5 unexcused absences = Loss of 1 letter grade for semester > 5 unexcused absences = Fail the course (F) Asleep in Class:Appearing to be asleep in class is the same as an unexcused absence (no warning) Absent on Speech Day:Student will present the speech at the next regularly scheduled class meeting unless other arrangements are made with the instructor prior to that next class.
