An Introduction to Photosynthesis

BENCHMARKS: OBJECTIVES:  I will state the overall equation of photosynthesis.  I will explain how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are part of an interrelated cycle.  I will describe the factors that affect photosynthesis.  SC.912.L.14.7*  SC.912.L.18.7-Identify the reactants, products, and basic functions of photosynthesis.  SC.912.L.18.9*- Explain the interrelated nature of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

REVIEW  Plants, algae, and some bacteria use light energy from the sun to produce food.  They are called photosynthetic autotrophs.  Animals, fungi, protozoa, and some bacteria obtain energy from the food they consume.  They are called heterotrophs. What are autotrophs and heterotrophs?

Take Notes  Comes from the Greek words:  photo - light  synthesis - putting together  Therefore, it means “using light to put something together”  During photosynthesis in the Chloroplasts, plants use energy from sunlight to convert water (H 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into carbohydrates (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) and oxygen (O 2 ). The energy is now STORED in the carbohydrate molecule. YOU MUST KNOW THIS EQUATION! What is photosynthesis? 6 CO H 2 O+ light C 6 H 12 O O 2

Take Notes How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related?

Reactants Products Exergonic or Exothermic Endergonic or Endothermic Atmosphere Sun Glucose (food) Makes muscles work Neurons work Heart work Lose the rest as heat to the environment Notice the sun’s energy enters photosynthesis and is stored in glucose… Animals eat the glucose and use the energy stored by the plants to recharge ATP… we use ATP to run everything in our bodies…ultimately the energy in ATP is used and release as heat… Energy flows… one way Notice that plants take in CO 2 from the atmosphere … make glucose with it… animals eat glucose and release the carbon back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide … where the plants can use it again… Elements(matter) cycle through the ecosystem

Reactant or Product? Oxygen Reactant or Product? Sugar Reactant or Product? Water

Photosynthesis Interactive  osynthesis.html osynthesis.html

 Algae (protist)– eukaryotic and autotrophic like a plant BUT… is unicellular, while all plants are multicellular  Algae do not have roots, stems, leaves, flowers, seeds, or cones like plants do– EVERY cell in the algae has to get its own nutrients  3 Groups of Bacteria: Cyanobacteria Chlorobi and Proteobacteria (blue-green) (green) (purple) surface waters deep waters most similar to plants use H 2 S instead of H 2 O First Oxygen

Think About It  What is energy?  What are some examples of energy?  What is the main source of energy in our planet?  Why don’t bushes and other trees usually grow underneath large trees?  Why do plants need sunlight to grow? What do we know?

Independent Practice Flashcards!!
