Background and rationale Aim: Establish demand for PQ Programme in CD for SW Policy Context: A Strategy for SW in NI; Transforming Your Care; Personal and Public Involvement; Statutory duty to consult; SW Research and Continuous Improvement Strategy; Regional Community Development Strategy ;Making Life Better Requirement for CD in undergraduate SW programme but gap in PiP framework

Comments re course design Long periods of study impact on your work which I can relate to from experience 1-2 days/month like current PQ (7 responses) It is difficult to do lengthy courses due to workload …. The availability of accredited PiP programmes in community development would facilitate the learning and development needs of those practitioner staff with primary community development remits as opposed to direct service delivery incorporating the discharge of statutory functions. From a logistical, operational, capacity and resource perspective, I would suggest that a modular pathway facilitating a small number of individuals who wished to secure a Masters Award would be appropriate but not a prior academic (requirement?)

Comments re overall initiative (1) I think that this programme is a very good idea but until the role of community development is better understood within the statutory sector, it may not lead to the desired change in thinking and practice. Social workers are key to community development. This would be a great idea I believe Community Development should be an intrinsic part of social work. It is very important to provide training and development to Social Workers in this area. However on a practical note placement of Social Workers in Community Organisations would need to be increased in order to develop and strengthen the links that would promote all of the above ticked boxes. At this time pressures within the health and social care systems, including Social Work, mean that the emhpasis is on reaction rather than prevention and I would be concerned that that social workers within the Statutory system do not have the capacity to / time to more that they are doing already Important to remember social workers employed in criminal justice, particularly in probation, have a keen interest in community development; partnership with the community has been critical in the success of PBNI Due to financial constraints would staff get freed up time to attend? it is very difficult as a social work manager to prioritise training on top of high demand already, keeping work life balance is also hard, yet due to the work I do I would have achieved awards multiple times if submitted or accredited in some way without too much hassle! Providing a parallel route into social work accreditation for qualified Community Work professionals would also benefit social work provision This programme is needed to raise the profile of the CD role and the valuable contribution it makes to social work. Working more effectively together to utilise all the resources available to communities will produce better outcomes

Comments re overall initiative (2) I commend this initiative. I feel there is a need to consolidate and significantly develop the social care workforce's knowledge and skills base in community development approaches linked to a dynamic evidence base as part of a focus on equipping the workforce to respond to the overarching service delivery resource and policy challenges. I feel that CD has been a long neglected and essential element of social work practice so would welcome any initiatives to promote same. As the regulator for the workforce and for education and training the questions did not fit with our context. We are keen to support the development of Community Development approaches and are keen to have this learning and development recognised within the PiP Framework CD is growing in importance in Children's given the recent investments. The interface with the community is therefore essential to undertake good social work and to maximise the impact of supporting vulnerable families I warmly welcome this development as I think it is an area that we within the Social Work profession have a limited understanding of. Relevant beyond HSC sector Service users moving from daycare - community have benefitted from care and support of daycare staff- important to include social care staff in training to bridge transition from daycare to community for some service users I think it is critical that social workers engage proactively with communities in N Ireland

Conclusions Clear demand across NI for PiP Community Development Training Programme for social work managers and social workers across agencies, programmes of care and sectors CD Training would help deliver a range of health and social care strategies impacting on social work CD training useful for partnership work, personalisation, user /carer involvement, maximising resources, creating positive outcomes for service users and carers and creating evidence base for SW The survey provides evidence to support developing CD modules to support Specialist and Leadership and Strategic Awards Although demand for combination of training options, short accredited courses(2-4 days) were preferred option with modular structure suggested
