Pier Giorgio Marchetti EOP-GSR ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Workshop Linked Open Data & OpenSearch – motivation The HMA Architecture Working Group leads a long lasting activity in harmonisation and standardisation of the Payload Data Ground Segment interfaces within the Open Geospatial ConsortiumHMA Architecture Working Group Open Geospatial Consortium 2.The HMA-S project is addressing a widely scoped standardisation plan including among others the OpenSearch geotemporal and Earth Observation extensionsHMA-S 3.CNES, EGI and Iguassu have been working independently on open source software implementing OpenSearchCNESEGIIguassu 4.The LEO - Linked Open Earth Observation Data for Precision Farming project plans to publish data according to the Linked Open Data paradigmLEO - Linked Open Earth Observation Data for Precision Farming 5.ESA Technology Project SMAAD addresses technologies for discovering and access to linked dataSMAAD

Pier Giorgio Marchetti EOP-GSR ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use 1.Avoid any unnecessary duplication of efforts and maximise the outcome of current parallel coding of open source implementations 2.OpenSearch extensions will be implemented in several instances by ESA and partners a coordinated effort ensures deviations from the spec are minimised 3. It should be possible to establish a good synergy between the OpenSearch work and the Linked Data one allowing a seamless transition from one technology to another 4.Last, but not least we assume the above technologies are instrumental for scaling up and addressing new dimensions of the “Big Data from Space” theme Workshop Linked Open Data & OpenSearch – motivation 1-2

ESA Unclassified - For Internal Use Big Data from Space Conference 1-2 We expect that such a conference may foster the: Widening of competences and expertise in the field of European research centres and industrial actors Cross fertilisation arising from different domains (like Earth Observation, Space Science, Space Weather, etc.) Synergy by joint activities addressing similar scientific and technology issues Reaping of benefits arising from industrial and research developments in terms of innovation, business development, employment and spin- in, spin off of technologies Definition of related technology programme activities

ESA Unclassified - For Internal Use Big Data from Space Conference 2-2 Conference main objectives should be to: Establish a common “Big Data from Space” scientific framework with interdisciplinary partners and foster a programmatic framework Establish a R&D network to sustain this field Establish a network of users, and give them access to data and computational resources (grid, cloud, high performance computing, network, data, etc.)
