Presentation transcript:

What is energy? Energy - the ability to do work Work - when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.

Types of Energy Potential- the energy an object has due to position or condition Examples: – A stretched rubber band – A music box that is wound up – A rock on the top of hill – Water at the top of a waterfall or at the top of a hydroelectric dam – Marble at top of a ramp How can we give any of these examples more potential energy?

Types of Energy Kinetic/Motion- energy of motion all moving objects have kinetic energy Examples: – Shooting the rubber band – Letting the music box play – The rock rolling down the hill – Water flowing in a hydroelectric dam – The marble rolling down the “ramp” Which would have more kinetic energy, a car on the ramp on the left or the steeper ramp?

never Energy is never created or destroyed, you can only change its form! There will always be the same amount of energy, but it can be transformed (or change form). Law of Conservation of Energy -With a rubber band, stretching it gives it potential energy. When you let go, the potential energy (PE) transforms into kinetic energy (KE). The more you stretch it, - When you let go, the PE is converted to KE. If you stretch it more, it will have more PE and then more KE – so it will fly a longer distance. the more PE you give it.
