Perkins funding made a difference at our college by: Providing funds to purchase equipment for 10 different CTE programs at WCC; Allowing the College to hire an instructor for a new Mechatronics program; Providing 51% of the salary/benefits for WCC’s Disability Counselor; and Providing funding for supportive personnel such as signers for students with disabilities.

1. We strengthened the academic, career and technical skills of our students by: Working with Wayne County Public Schools and Wayne Community College’s Coordinator for Cooperative Programs to develop new Programs of Study (Business Administration and Agribusiness Technology); Hosting Linkages meetings (to include principals, college administrators, counselors, faculty, and career development coordinators)

2. We linked career and technical education at the secondary level with career and technical education at the postsecondary level: The College offered its first ever “Industry Ignites Instruction” initiative which brought together Wayne County public school counselors, career development coordinators, CTE instructors, college faculty, local industry leaders, and the Wayne County Development Alliance. WCC hosted a two-day event consisting of hands-on instruction in five CTE program areas (mechanical engineering, industrial systems, computer-integrated technology, welding, and mechatronics), and provided local area industry tours. The purpose was to help participants connect the training with employment and see the types of skills employers are seeking and the training that’s needed.

We provided students with strong experience in, and understanding of all aspects of an industry by: Providing co-op and internship opportunities with local industry employers; Providing a Work-Based Learning / Career Services Coordinator Hosting middle school, high school, and community career fairs; and Providing industry tours

We developed, improved, or expanded the use of technology in career and technical education by: Providing opportunities for faculty to learn new uses of technology through professional development activities Improving and expanding state-of-practice equipment in ten CTE programs (medical lab technology, phlebotomy, pharmacy technology, dental assisting, dental hygiene, information systems, agriculture and natural resources, industrial systems technology, transportation, and mechatronics).

5. We provided professional development by: Promoting internal and external professional development opportunities such as workshops, seminars, conferences, and continuing education courses; and Encouraging faculty to earn licenses and certifications relevant to their program areas.

6. We developed and implemented evaluations of our career and technical education programs by: Utilizing the North Carolina Community College System Performance Measures for Success data; and Utilizing the College’s internal data to include: program reviews, graduate surveys, planning objectives, program learning outcomes, and course learning outcomes.

7. We Initiated, improved, expanded, and modernized quality career and technical education programs, including relevant technology by: Utilizing program review data to analyze necessary program changes based upon program enrollment, completion, and student success; Analyzing program graduate survey data to find out what students think about the program and changes that can be made; Implementing program advisory committee feedback, when feasible; and Purchasing state-of-practice equipment for CTE programs

8. We provided services and activities that are of sufficient size, scope, and quality to be effective as evidenced by: Institutional data such as program reviews, graduate survey responses, planning objectives, program learning outcomes, and course learning outcomes

9. We provided activities to prepare special populations students who are enrolled in CTE courses by: Employing a full-time Disability Services Counselor who devotes at least 51% of her time to special populations students enrolled in CTE programs
