Diversity is Differences America is known world wide for our differences Example: Different Cultures or Religions

Diversity in America

We have many different religions We have many different types of jobs We come from many different backgrounds (economic & cultural) We eat many different types of food We have large and small towns in America We came to America for different reasons

Immigration Immigration: Leaving one country to start a new life in another America is founded on Immigration with people coming from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America Your family history involves immigration

America’ Melting Pot

Discrimination Discrimination—The unfair treatment of a group of people (minorities/women/older people) African Americans suffered from discrimination in our country. African Americans didn’t get many opportunities in life as a ‘white’ American until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Women today are still not paid the same as men in many jobs (except in the military & government jobs) Today, some corporations/businesses try to ‘get rid of’ older people for cheaper (younger) labor

Racism Racism– The belief that one’s own race is superior to those of other races. Racism unfortunately still exists in the United States. There are laws which protects Americans against racism including hate crimes.

Values Values—Standards of behavior; guidelines for how people should treat each other Values help us decide how we should act and how we should live our lives. There are THREE major American values: Justice, Freedom, and Equality.

Justice Justice—Fairness; the idea that every person deserves to be treated fairly Equal respect includes the idea that every person deserves to be treated fairly. Justice, however, does not require that people always be treated the same.

Symbol of Justice in America

Freedom Freedom—The ability to say what you want, go where you want, and do what you want Americans need a reminder that they are free; but freedom did not come free (w/ the fighting in our nation’s history). Also, there is a difference between having the freedom to do what you want--- and having a privilege (something given to you).

Symbols of Freedom

Equality Equality—The condition of everyone having the same rights and opportunities EXAMPLE: Give an opportunity to a white male to get an accounting job with the same opportunity to a black woman with the same experience and education

The End of Chapter 1

Chapter 2 American Society and its Values

Rules Rules–Specific expectations about what our behavior should be. Rules are needed because if we didn’t have them, countries/society/schools could very easily get out of control.

Formal Rules in Society We have laws including:

Informal Rules in Society We have informal rules including :

Social Institutions Social Institutions — Systems of values and rules that determine how our society is organized. There are FIVE major institutions in our society: 1) Family4) Economy 2) Religion5) Government 3) Education

The Family

Religion

Education

Economy

The Economy Economy: A system for producing and Economy: A system for producing and distributing goods and services distributing goods and services to fulfill people’s wants. to fulfill people’s wants. Consumer: A person who uses or Consumer: A person who uses or consumes goods and services consumes goods and services to satisfy his or her wants. to satisfy his or her wants. Where do you get these services? Where do you get these services? In a Market : where people exchange goods and services services

The Role of the Government ► 1. Keeping the Peace  We create laws to protect people and society. ► 2. Protecting the country  We want to keep America safe from terrorism. ► 3. Providing necessary services  Roads, sewers and schools for children to learn. ► 4. Maintaining other Institutions  Protect our freedoms as Americans and help Americans during natural disasters (earth quakes and tornadoes)

Forms of Government

Monarchy A form of government in which all or most of the power is in the hands one individual, or the monarch. The Monarch’s authority is hereditary.

Dictatorship A government controlled by one person, called a dictator, who usually takes power by force, rather than by inheriting it Kim Jung Il (Dictator) of North Korea

Democracy A system of government in which the power is shared by all the people (The United States and its election process)

What is Patriotism? Patriotism is the demonstration of love and devotion to one’s country.
