Apple Devices  Types of Devices  IPad ( 10” Tablet )  IPad Mini ( 7” Tablet )  There are different hardware versions of the apple IPad.  Currently Apple is on their 4 th generation IPad and 1 st generation IPad Mini  The IPad and IPad Mini are only made by Apple.  IOS – The Ipad Operating system  There are multiple updates to the IOS operating system. The current version is 6.1  All versions work in a similar fashion however newer versions allow for added features.  Certain hardware versions supports certain features.  An Example is Siri, which requires an Ipad 3 or greater to work. Siri will not work on an IPAD 2. IPAD IPAD Mini

Android Devices  Types of Devices  Google Nexus 10 ( 10” tablet)  Google Nexus 7 ( 7” tablet)  Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 ( 10” tablet)  Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD ( 7” tablet)  Barns and Noble NOOK HD ( 7” tablet) The Kindle Fire/Fire HD and NOOK uses highly modified android operating systems to work on their tablets that bring the special look and feel to their products.  Different versions of the operating system. Named Gingerbread, IceCreamSandwich, JellyBean.  Jellybean 4.2 is the latest.  Each version of the operating system can be different from the version before it.  Each tablet manufacturer can change the way the operating system works on that specific tablet model. Kindle Fire HD Kindle Fire Nexus 7Nook HD Nexus 10 Asus Transformer Infinity

Windows Devices  Types of Devices  Windows Surface RT  Windows Surface Pro  Windows Surface RT and Surface Pro actually use different operating systems.  Surface RT uses a restricted/modified version of windows allowing only certain applications to run that are custom written for the windows RT interface.  Surface Pro uses Windows 8 Pro that is available on Laptop computers. Any program that meets the recommended hardware requirements and can be installed on Windows 8 can be installed on the Surface Pro.

Printing from a tablet  IPad ( IOS devices)  Airprint ( Airprint is only available on printers that support airprint)  Some printers have special apps that will allow you to print to the printer.  Android Devices  Some android devices have built in print capabilities to network printers.  Some printers have special apps that will allow you to print to the printer.  Windows Surface RT  Certain network printers will work with Windows Surface RT. To verify your printer check the Windows Surface RT compatibility website.  Windows Surface PRO  Any network printer capable of printing on Windows 8 will work. This includes printers distributed through a server.

Applications  IPad ( IOS devices)  Apple devices use the Apple App store.  Android Devices  Android Devices can use the Google Play Store or Amazon Kindle App Store to purchase apps.  Other Android apps can be purchased through Amazon as well.  Windows Surface RT  Windows Surface RT apps can be purchased through the Windows Marketplace.  Windows Surface PRO  Windows Surface Pro Apps can be purchased through the Windows Marketplace.  Users can also install any software package made for Windows 8 on the Surface Pro providing they have USB DVD Drive or if the software is digitally Downloaded.

Applications (continued)  There are paid and free apps in all of the app stores.  Users can take tests, study, learn all from the different apps available.  Users can use cloud services such as google docs and evernote  As well as cloud storage systems such as dropbox and box.net  Students can download quizzing software that allow them to take practice tests and get instant results.  Digital Textbooks bring an interactive way of learning that allow not only text but audio and video to be integrated into a enhanced learning environment. Next up is some applications that might be useful.

 Quick office allows you to create and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. You can also save and edit information in the cloud.  Available for IPad and Android Devices

 Make free video calls or text message to any user on the skype network.  Skype is available on Android, Ipads, and Microsoft Tablets

 Splashtop Whiteboard is a virtual whiteboard that allows you to integrate a projector, computer and tablet for a full whiteboard experience.  Software is installed to a computer and then also on tablet. Once synched the tablet acts as a whiteboard allowing one to draw, annotate, and manipulate the computer from a distance in the room (wifi connectivity is required).  Available for Android and Ipad Devices

 Evernote let’s you store notes, photos, audio and video in the cloud.  Helps with organization of information and easy access from all types of devices.  Available on IPad, Android and Windows Tablets

 Penultimate allows you to write handwritten notes on your tablet with the use of a stylus.  Currently available for Ipad and an android version is in the works

Accessories  There are many accessories for tablets available.  Bluetooth Devices such as Keyboards, Speakers, and Headphones make your tablet even more powerful.  Docks allow you to connect your device easily for charging or for using additional accessories.  Some accessories turn your tablet into a portable studio. An example of this is the IRig Bluetooth Midi Controller and Electric Guitar hookup. This allows you to turn your ipad into a recording studio with your music equipment.
