 Moghul emperor Akbar the great introduced the calendar more than 400 years ago about 1556 AD.  The Bengali New Year is subsequently known as Bangabda.  The day is a national holiday which falls on April 14.  In Bangladesh, the official amended calendar designed by the Bangla Academy. Typically Bangla Food People start the day with the traditional breakfast of paanta vhaat (cooked rice soaked with water), green chillies, onion and fried hilsha fish. Traditional Bengali dresses.
