What Year 6 Are Looking Forward to about Secondary School Eating ice cream everyday New Uniform New Friends Having their own locker Doing New Subjects Being treated more like a grown up

“I’m worried about finding my way to all my new classes and getting shouted at if I am late” “I’m worried about HOMEWORK being hard” “I’m worried about getting split up from my friends” “I might get DETENTION” “What if I forget my Locker Combination?” “I’m scared if I can’t remember all my Homework on time I will get a Detention” What Year 6 Are Worried About

Addressing Students’ Concerns Homework Lockers Finding their way around Being split up from their friends

Year 7 Homework There will be no compulsory homework for Year 7 for the first 4 weeks of term (up to Idul Fitri holiday) – though some subjects will set small tasks on an optional basis For the rest of Term 1, teachers will set homework according to a Homework Timetable, with a maximum of 15 minutes per subject, for two subjects per night From Term 2, this will increase to 30 minutes per subject, for a maximum of 2 subjects per night Homework Timetables will be issued early in Term 1 You should help your child to stick to the time limits set by teachers

Lockers We will issue locker combinations on Swap Day 3 and students will be reminded of these in August. Students will have practise with using their locker with their tutors on Swap Day 3 If combinations are forgotten, Ibu Maria in the Secondary Office can provide the code

Finding Their Way Around Secondary Three swap days instead of one should help! Swap Day 2 – they have the classrooms they will need to find already so they can find them in advance Swap Day 3 – Tutors will ensure that students can locate their Tutor Base confidently and we will do an orientation walk of the main areas in Secondary.

New Class Groupings A positive way to form new friendships Each student has been asked to choose 5 friends they would like to be with next year – they will be with at least one of these in their new class Classes are mixed for some subjects including PE, MFL, and Maths – so they will see some other familiar faces in these lessons All other subjects as well as Tutor Time each day are spent in Tutor Groups – so students will get to know each other better very quickly Remaining concerns should be raised with the Tutor in the first instance

The Role of the Tutor Students see their tutors every day Tutors will help ensure planners are kept up to date and uniform is correctly worn each day Tutors will take students through the Learning Review cycle, setting targets with each individual Tutors will be the first person parents contact with any questions or concerns

Uniform

Where Do I Go For Help! Your child’s Tutor will be the first person you speak to in almost all cases of pastoral concerns or queries is usually the most convenient way to contact teachers as a starting point – they can then arrange a time to telephone you or meet you You should always copy the Pastoral Year Leader in to your queries – to keep them informed Should a concern be unresolved then the PYL will step in to ensure a solution is reached For subject specific queries (e.g. amount of homework or progress in any one subject) you should contact the subject teacher, and copy the Head of Faculty to the query

What will happen in August? The first two hours of Day 1 will be in tutor groups, again practising using lockers, and receiving timetables and planners Lessons begin later that day after a Welcome Assembly From Day 2, students should follow their normal timetable, moving from lesson to lesson with their classmates There will be a Meet the Tutor evening early in Term 1 There will be another information session for parents who are new to the school or new to Secondary in Week 1

Look Forward! Year 6 are very excited about the Secondary School following Swap Day 1 I hope that you as parents are feeling confident and clear about what you need to know – or at least where to go for help if not! Enjoy the rest of Year 6!
