Presentation transcript:

HOW TO GRAPH PIECEWISE FUNCTIONS 1)Graph both equations. 2)Place a dotted line at the x value of the breaking point. 3)For each graphed equation, erase the part that is not within the given limits. 4)Choose where to have an open or closed dot.

HOW TO WRITE PIECEWISE FUNCTIONS 1)Set up the function and piecewise notations. 2)Determine the expression for each part of the graph and fill it in as the given functions. 3)Determine each equations limits and write them next to each of the functions.

PIECEWISE FUNCTION WORD PROBLEM Mark’s hourly pay at his part-time job is related to the number of hours he works. If he works less than 15 hours, he is paid $10. If he works more than 20 hours, he is paid $14. Otherwise he is paid $12. 1)Write a piecewise function for Mark’s pay rate. 2)Determine the values of the following using your piecewise function. f (5) f (13.5) f (21)

PIECEWISE FUNCTION WORD PROBLEM Yummy’s Candy Store has a sale for all of their specialty lollipops. The regular price for each is $1.50. Yet if you buy more than 5, you pay only $1.25 for each. If you buy more than 10, the price is only $1 for each. 1)Write a piecewise function for the prices. 2)Graph the piecewise function.

_______ FUNCTIONS Graph the following function. Lizzy is hired at a new part-time job. She starts off with earning $10 perhour. She is told that every half year her pay increases by $2. Write and graph a piecewise function showing her hourly pay for the first three years on the job.
