Directions to PG & CPD Centre When giving directions to your guests and visitors please remember that there are now three reception areas on the Luton campus. Please make it clear to your visitors that they should come to, or ask for directions to the Postgraduate & CPD Centre Reception.

Fire Evacuations When the fire alarm sounds your evacuation route is by the nearest available fire exit. You can also exit via the reception Refuge Points If a person is unable to use the stairs (eg: wheelchair user) they should go to the refuge point located at the top of each stairwell and press the “Call” button on the green coloured Emergency call point panel on the wall. This will notify reception via a panel on the ground floor (next to the fire alarm panel) that there is someone there and where they are located. The person waiting by the stairwell can be spoken to via the speaker on the panel and a telephone connection at reception. You must wait by the refuge point once pressed so that we know your precise location. Your Fire Assembly point is St Marys Church (by the railings) or Vicarage Street Lecturers / Chair persons / Trainers and Teachers are responsible for ensuring the safe evacuation of their groups If you see or smell a fire dial and activate a local break glass call point

Top tips for... fire safety Know where the local fire exits and escape routes are Know how to raise the alarm in the event of discovering a fire If the fire alarm sounds - calmly evacuate yourself & your students Report any missing persons from your group to the identified Building Evacuation Controller or Fire Warden when safely outside Follow all advice from identified UoB Fire Wardens / Building Evacuation Controllers

Top safety tips for… preventing slips trips or falls If you spill something on the floor - don’t ignore it - clean it up! clearly visible If you see anything that could cause someone to slip / trip or fall over (either solid or liquid) either move it out of harms way or - highlight it any way you can so that it’s clearly visible to all! If all else fails.. report it to somebody that can make it safe! Stairs are especially hazardous so pay extra attention when using them! Where the ground or floor level causes concern - maybe misplaced floor tiles or paving surfaces, report it as a helpdesk request - Try to stick to wearing appropriate footwear (with good grip) while at work

Top safety tips for... safe manual handling Avoid manually handling the item! Use a mechanical device! If you must move it manually assess the risks, think ‘LITE’ consider the - L oad - is it - heavy / an awkward shape / sharp edged? I ndividual - do they have the strength or stamina? T ask - is it repetitive / cover long distances / strenuous? E nvironment - is it lit / even surfaced / dry and clean?
