EGI Slide 1 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ESA E-Infrastructure needs in the context of “EO Innovation Europe” … bring the users to the data

EGI Slide 2 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use “Enable new and or previously unfeasible scientific and commercial data exploitation by establishing a reliable EO cloud infrastructure resource for EO Data Customers.” Why is cloud computing an attractive opportunity?  Data and Computing Power resources needed to generate useful information can be packaged together in the “cloud” as a minimum platform implementation  Such platforms can become a marketplace for Tools => another resource can become part of the package  “Gathering” of users around a platform offering can ease collaboration across a Community => opportunity to package the “Knowledge & Skill” ingredient  a cloud platform approach has the potential to create an integrated package of all needed ingredients in an innovative scientific and business data exploitation environment EO Innovation Europe programmatic element ’EO Application Platform’

EGI Slide 3 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use EO Innovation Europe Programmatic Context Users public services Users profit-making services Users geosciences Outreach element Network of community platforms ERA-PLANET European Plate Observing System (EPOS) e.g. TEP Hydrology community platform TEP Geohazards community platform Education community platform TEP Urban community platform Regional/National community platforms International development community platform ECV community platforms Stimulating element R&D remote sensing communities Science 2.0 QA4EO DISC SMOS MEP Proba-V MEP Heritage Data EPs Biomass MEP Enabling element (common to all platforms)

EGI Slide 5 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use EO Application Platform Key Objectives  Democratization of ICT resources  Support integrated development cycle from research to operational service  Support experimentation of “good ideas” for EO exploitation with minimum investment while guaranteeing rapid scalability in case of success  Minimize cost of ICT (e.g. by sharing) enabling business cases with low revenue opportunities  Provide marketplace for “semi-finished” products and tools ready to be integrated to provide end-to-end service for a specific customer  Provide EO-data specific expertise to target communities

EGI Slide 6 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Data-driven Platform Layer: e.g. linked to a mission or measurement type Orchestration, Tools, Sensor Know-How Data layer (DaaS) Infrastructure layer (IaaS+PaaS): +standard ICT Cloud Resources Applications/Users working in traditional mode (download & process with local resources/tools/know- how) Applications/Users working with remote data/processing using their own tools/know- how Applications/Users working with remote data/processing/tools/know- how provided as a service, adding problem-specific data, tools and know-how Community-driven Platform Layer e.g. Thematic/Regionalb Community Tools/Knowledge base/Language Datacube, non-space data Applications/Users using Community platform data/processing/tools/know- how, focussing on the specific “business case” only Cloud Resource Business Interop. Layer Federated Cloud Interoperability Layer Geospatial Resource Business Interop. Layer Geospatial Interoperability Layer Data Access Business Interop. Layer Data Access Tech. EGI Slide 7 ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use EO Innovation Europe e-infrastructure need summary  IaaS platforms Open to scientific and commercial community at European, national and local level Possibly free for research use to sustain initial uptake Possibly revenue-share based for non-research users Hosting PB volume EO data at minimum cost …. … or enabling “on-the-fly staging”, i.e real-time transfer of the data when needed  AAA Interoperability Avoid need for registration with multiple resource providers for Authentication Standard schema for authorisation to resources with assertion of user properties (e.g. science user, country, …) Accounting of pay-per-use resources “Neutral” Operations of a Federated User Management system  Cloud Interoperability Standard layer over heterogeneous clouds to avoid lock-in
