With people sitting next to you, discuss the importance of these words from Chapter 11.  weight loss  tornado  confession 3

Discuss these words from Chapter 12.  Pact  Wedding  Matches 4

With the people in your group, compare your questions from chapter 12 and choose a favorite. Choose one that is thought- provoking. 5

Why did we read this book?  Everything you read addresses universal concerns that apply to our society.  These issues are relevant to our world.  Even though a novel, short story or article might not be about something directly related to you as the reader, it has something to say about our society.  It has valuable ideas that relate to us as people.  This is called a THEME. 6

Example  Romeo and Juliet  Negative consequences result from rash decisions.  To Kill a Mockingbird  Extraordinary efforts are needed to fight injustice.  Avatar  Technological advancement is not necessarily a good thing. 7

On your T-chart, write down a theme from the novel. Example in the Novel Big Brother uses music, slogans, rituals, films and other methods to shape the citizens’ thinking. Examples in Today’s World Political advertisements are carefully orchestrated productions. Lighting, camera angles, and music are all used to influence the viewers’ thinking. Advertisers manipulate language to take our money. “Used cars” are called “previously owned vehicles.” 8 From 1984: Propaganda is used to influence the thinking of citizens.

Please sit in these groups. Choose the person who lives farthest away from school to report out. 9

Take out your syllabus and let’s look ahead. 10
