Chapter 1 Lesson 3 Mapping Technology How are maps made? What are GPS and GIS?

How are maps made? Mapmakers survey areas using satellites and aerial photographs They then digitalize the images – Convert locations on their photos to numbers Computers produce maps using the digitalized data

How are maps made? Aerial Photographs – Pictures taken from planes Many photos overlap to create a map They show natural and human made features

How are maps made? Satellite images – Pictures of an area based on satellite data Images show color and brightness of Earth’s surface – Vegetation shows up reddish or greenish – Water shows up blue or black – Cities show up bluish grey

What are GPS and GIS GPS- Global Positioning System – A navigation system that uses satellites to determine locations – 2 parts: Orbiting satellites (in space) and a GPS receiver (on Earth’s surface) – 24 satellites orbit Earth – Where would you find a GPS receiver?

What is GPS and GIS GIS- Geographic Information System These are computerized images of locations and features of Earth’s surface – A digital map of Earth
