Notes # 2 War before the U.S Europe

Hitler Rearms Germany The Versailles Treaty of 1919 forced Germany to repay war debt, while also limiting the size of their army. Hitler takes power in 1933 On March 16 th, 1935, Hitler announced that Germany was rebuilding its army, and would not repay its debt. No one did anything about it. “Don’t be furious bro”

Remilitarizing the Rhineland The Versailles Treaty had forbidden Germany to have troops in the Rhineland, an area in Germany along the Rhine River that had many industries and was next to France, Belgium and the Netherlands. On March 7 th, 1936, Hitler did it anyways. No one did anything about it. Helga, check out my awesome ride!!! NOOICE!!!

Anschluss On March 13 th, 1938 Germany annexes Austria. Now Austria is a part of Germany. Hitler wanted to unify the Germanic peoples! Its good to be German

Munich Pact On September 30, 1938, in Munich Germany, France and Britain agree to give Germany the Sudetenland, land in Czechoslovakia that the German’s claimed held a majority of Germans and so it should be a part of Germany. There pretty, he he!!! I like flowers!!! I’m not weird!!! Hey!!!

Munich Pact Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister who was chiefly responsible for the Pact. "My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honor. I believe it is peace for our time... Go home and get a nice quiet sleep." Sucka!!!

Czechoslovakia On March 14th, 1939, Slovakia declares independence from Czech, for they are pro- German. On March 15 th, 1939, Germany invades Czech. Little opposition is given. No one reacts to the invasion.

Stalin and the Soviet Union Upset that Britain and France did not include him in the Munich Pact, Stalin and Hitler signed the Nonaggression Pact on August 23, The Pact pledged that the two countries would not go to war, and that once Hitler had invaded Poland, Germany and the Soviet Union would divide up Eastern Europe. Take that Britain and France!

Start of WWII: Invasion of Poland Germany invaded Poland on September 1 st, Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3 rd. The Polish offered little resistance. On October 6 th, the Polish had been conquered.

Phony War After the fall of Poland, both Germany, France and Britain looked at each other, not fighting, just looking.

Denmark and Norway On April 9 th, 1940 Germany invades both Denmark and Norway. Denmark fell easily on the 9th, but Norway held out with the help of British and French troops. However, by June 9 th, Norway surrendered.

Invasion of France On may 10, 1940, Germany invaded along the front of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and France. With the French were British troops sent to help their allies. But on June 25, 1940, France fell. A new French government was set up, called Vichy, in Southern France. They were loyal to Germany.

Greece On October 28 th, 1940 Italy, ally to Germany, invaded Greece to expand their territory. However, they were not succeeding. On April 6 th, Hitler invaded Greece to help. After a valiant fight, Greece surrendered on April 30 th.

Tripartite Pact On September 27, 1940 Germany, Italy and Japan form an alliance. They will be known as the AXIS.
