ON-LINE CONSORTIUM MEETING AUGUST 14, 2012 STEERING COMMITTEE UPDATE Blackboard

A Vision for the 21 st Century Learning Institution is a student-centered institution, unconstrained by time and place, that operates simultaneously in a local and global context. This new institution is constantly measuring and communicating its progress, continually renewing its commitment to students, community, and economic competitiveness. We are partners with Blackboard in this endeavor to evolve education together, for greater student success. 2

3 Understanding Roles

Blackboard Roles: What Are They? System Roles Determine access to: System-wide user privileges Can restrict Domain / IH Criteria Institution Roles Dictate access to: Community Engagement Brand Tabs Modules Organization Catalogue Course Delivery Course Catalogue Content Management Permissions Workflow e-Portfolio Learning Objects Catalogue Metadata Templates Course/Org Roles Determine access to: Certain features and functions within a Course or Organization 4

System Roles System Administrator System Support Course Administrator User Administrator Support Guest None Observer Custom

System Role: System Administrator 10 All administrative functions and every individual Course Control Panel

System Role: System Support 11 Access to most administrative functions but except Role Administration and Privileges and individual course administration panels 1.Users 2.Courses 3.Look & Feel 4.Security 5.Extensions 6.Tools 1.Users 2.Courses 3.Look & Feel 4.Security 5.Extensions 6.Tools

System Role: Course Administrator Access to course management User search and Batch creation of users Some tools and utilities Customize Brands No access to individual Course Control Panels Users 2.Courses 3.Look & Feel 4.Tools 1.Users 2.Courses 3.Look & Feel 4.Tools

User Administrator Access to areas of the Users panel –Create users –Delete users –Modify users –View course enrollments No enrollments of users in courses 13 1.Users 1 1

System Role: Support Access to areas of the Users panel –Search users Access to areas of the Course panel –Export / Import a course –Enroll users Users 2.Courses 1.Users 2.Courses

System Role: None Users that do not need access to System Administration tasks Default System Role—MOST users on your system will have the NONE role. Users can access any tabs except System Admin and any course in which they are enrolled. The Course Role (Course Builder, Grader, Guest, Instructor, Student, Teaching Assistant) assigned to that user for that particular course will determine the level of access and rights within a specific course. Which users will have the system role of none?

System Role: Guest A user with the System Role can view any unsecured areas of Blackboard Learn. A user with the Course Role of Guest can view any unsecured areas of courses that have Guest Access enabled. Every Blackboard system has a pre-set user account called "Blackboard Guest" with the username of "guest" and the password of “guest”. Any user who logs in with this username and password or who clicks the Preview button on the Login page is automatically given the Administrative System Role of Guest. A Guest does not have access to the System Admin tab.

System Role: Observer A user with the System Role of Observer can “shadow” other users on the system. An Observer can see all courses in which a specific user is enrolled. Within each course, an Observer can view those materials and tools that the Instructor has opened to Observers. An Observer does not have access to the System Admin tab.

Course Roles Administrators or Instructors may assign a Course Role to a user when performing enrollment functions for a course. Course Roles determine the particular level of access and rights a user has in a course. A user’s role may vary from course to course. Course Roles Instructor Teaching Assistant Course Builder Grader Student Guest Custom Organization Roles* Leader Assistant Organization Builder Grader Participant Guest Custom * Only with Community Engagement License

Course Naming Conventions Establish a convention for Course IDs and names. –Use letters, numbers, periods, dashes, and underscores. –Parallel other organization naming convention. Include pieces of information in Course IDs that assure uniqueness and facilitate course searches. ABR002.C IRQ Course Identifier Cohort Section Year Location

Creating a Course Courses may be created in three different ways: –Create Course function in the System Control Panel. –Course Creation Wizard (if enabled). –Create Course button on the Login Page (if enabled– not recommended) –In almost all educational organizations, course creation privileges should be restricted to System Administrators and/or Course Administrators.

Course Management Tools ExportImport Move course content from one Blackboard server to another Includes options to export Content, Course Settings, Discussions, Grade Center, Groups, and Assessments NO student data! Archive Restore Make a “snapshot” of the entire course with one click Saves Grade book Includes student data Restore will recreate user accounts if needed

Course Management Tools Copy Course –System Administrators and others may copy Course Content, Course Settings, Discussions, Grade Center Items, Groups, Assessments, and user data. –Existing Courses can be copied into new Course or merged into other existing Courses. –Command-line tools to batch copy courses are available. Bulk Delete – Use with great caution –Function is available in the Course Control Panel only. –System Administrators and Instructors may remove Course Content and other materials including user data. –Bulk Delete courses will have the original Course ID. –The Bulk Delete may be used to “reset” a course for a new term or school year.
