Kids Creating Videos It's This Easy! An Introduction to Integrating Video into the Classroom

Who's in the audience today? Grade Level and Subject Taught What is your experience with student-created video? What aspect of video do you want to focus on in your classroom?

Why Use Video in the Classroom? Student Engagement Student Sense of Achievement 21st Century Learning Skills - especially Higher Order Thinking Skills and Media Literacy Closes the Digital Divide (Digital Native vs. Digital Immigrant)

Different Learning Styles Aural Visual Kinesthetic TEACHER VIDEO: Visual STUDENT VIDEO: Visual and Kinesthetic

Demonstration (one-time) o Allows teacher to demonstrate things you may not be able to within the confines or timeframe of the regular classroom Review of Curriculum Extra Support Materials “Speak the same language” Allows students who are absent to easily catch-up on work missed Usually only have to make it one time Benefits for Teachers

Student Created Video Allows students to learn new concepts in conjunction with their subject material Differentiated Instruction / Student Choice Though more work in initial set-up, often easier end result Proper training on equipment/software is VITAL May require students to put in additional time independent from classroom

Pre-Production Good video begins with a lot of pre-production planning: o What story do you want to tell? Why is it important? What message do you want to convey? o Audience - Who are the people who care about this topic? o Location - Where does the story take place?

Many jobs involved; Size of your group will dictate whether these are shared or individual duties A four person team could be comprised of a Director/Producer; a Researcher/Writer/ Storyboard Artist, a Camera Operator/Sound, and an Editor/Special Effects person. Make sure the exact responsibilities for each team member are clear before you begin actual planning of video. Production Team Roles

Putting It All Together Assemble Production Team Story boarding - writing, re-writing, revising Assemble Talent Plan the shoot - scout the location for the shoot Get permissions and releases Assemble/gather Props, Sound, Graphics Raw Footage - Takes and Re-takes Editing Producing the finished video

Common Examples of Student Video School News or Orientation Video for New Students “Movie” Trailer (book, article, historical era or event) How-to videos (Math, Science, PE) Field Trip

Exploration Time Let's look at a few examples, thinking about the following: Evidence of Pre-production work Audience - who is it? Story or message

Video Examples St. Charles Animal Shelter - Hahnville HS Student Council Public Service Announcement - Grade 4-6 Teach 21- Living History - While the World Watched Girl Bullying - Lauren Mayes- Carnegie Middle School (Grade 8) 2009 Wacky-Scientists-Forest-Eco-System - JP Dabbs Elementary

Independent Exploration... School Tube - All Grade Levels Middle School Videos - (click on 'Samples'Middle School Videos - (click on 'Samples') Urban Dreams - Oakland Technical High School Students

INTERMISSION Three-minute Stretch

To make a video recording to use in the classroom, you need: o Video Camera (Simpler is better) o Cable to connect camera to display computer (or Flip Cam) o Video Editing Software (optional) o Web site to host your clip (if posting online)  School Loop – School/Teacher Website  Wiki or Blog  School Tube  Other Student Video Hosting Sites

EASIEST: FLIP Video Camera, Digital camera with a video feature, or Mini DV Camera Quality is acceptable for basic classroom and online use Often can connect directly to display (TV or Projector) If high-quality video is needed, use a better digital video camera (Sanyo HD1010 or equivalent). Use a Tripod!! "43 Ways to Use a Pocket Video in the Classroom"

Don't forget Animoto is a web-based application that enables the user to use still images; add text, music, transition effects to create video. Educators can register for a free account with up to 50 "promo-code" licenses. This allows creation of full length video.

Ideas You May Have? Now that you've seen some ways students can use video, use this handout to make notes about possible videos you might have your students create. Refer to "Student Video Across the Curriculum" if it helps you to get ideas. How can you use Video Cameras in the Classroom? Identify activities for each of the subjects below Science Language Arts Math Social Studies
